Learn about the Big Island’s orchid history
The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club offers a free presentation by Julie Goettsch at its meeting on Wednesday. Open to those interested in orchids, the gathering is 7 p.m. at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall. A potluck starts off the meeting and guests are invited to participate.
Goettsch is past president of the Hilo Orchid Society and leads the Orchid Isle Project, a public service initiative with the goal to beautify the island through orchids. She will present “Since Before Dirt: The Unlikely History of Orchids that Made the Orchid Isle.”
The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club is West Hawaii’s oldest orchidaceae organization with a mission to learn and foster orchid culture and promote fellowship among orchid collectors. The club meets the second Wednesday of every month at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall in Honalo.

Brain Injury Support group meets in Kona
The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services on Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona.
The speaker will be Judy Bell, president of Hawaii Community Caregiver Network, who will outline HCCN’s projects, focusing on Powerful Tools for Caregivers a national, evidence-based, scripted program aimed at teaching caregivers to thrive not just survive while caring for loved ones. In the weekly classes, caregivers develop a wealth of self-care tools to reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and health care or service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions.

Kiwanis Club meets
The Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Makalei Golf Club in Kailua-Kona.
All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited to attend. The speakers will be Patrick Hurney, executive director of Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii, and AnnMarie Muramoto, Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii board vice president.
Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Jehovah’s Witnesses convention slated for Aug. 11-13
“Don’t Give Up!” is the theme of a three-day convention Jehovah’s Witnesses will be presenting Aug. 11-13 on the Big Island and in select venues around the globe.
The Bible-based program is designed to give people hope in an otherwise hopeless world. Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium at 350 Kalanikoa St. in Hilo is the venue for Hawaii Island.
The Witnesses are participating in a global campaign to personally invite the general public. Admission to each event is free.
The program is divided into 52 parts and will be presented in a variety of formats, including brief discourses, interviews and short videos.
The public Bible discourse at 11:20 a.m. Aug. 13 is titled “Never Give Up Hope!” based on Jeremiah 29:11, which reminds everyone that God wants us to have a future of hope and peace.
