Caregiver workshop offered Friday
Elizabeth Kent presents “Communicating Needs to Family Members and Service Providers: A Workshop for Caregivers of Adults (age 60+)” on Friday in Kailua-Kona.
The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Registration is required.
The workshop will teach communication tools to promote understanding through a variety of topics including careful listening to discover why something matters to another person; the importance of “how” a message is said as well as “what” is said; verbal and nonverbal components of messages; and how to ask effective questions and focus on what is of most importance.
Kent, J.D., has helped people and institutions find solutions to sticky problems for more than 25 years. A trained facilitator and mediator, she teaches graduate classes in conflict system design and negotiation at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a variety of conflict resolution skills classes around the state.

Scam Jam seminars planned
AARP Hawaii, the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and others are presenting free Scam Jam seminars on Saturday in Hilo and Kona.
Surveys show one in 10 Americans are victimized just by phone scams. Online scammers and financial con artists steal from millions more. Estimated losses nationwide are about $16 billion. The prime targets of scammers are kupuna. While younger people are more likely to fall victim to scammers, people 60 and older, when they are taken, lose the most money.
People who come to the seminars will learn the top scams that con artists use in Hawaii and how to protect yourself from becoming a victim.
The Kona Scam Jam runs from 5-7 p.m. at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Council Chambers, and the Hilo Scam Jam is slated 9-11:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Cross on West Lanikaula Street.
Susan Arthur, of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Investor Education Foundation is the featured speaker. Other participants include the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii and the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Office of the Securities Commissioner.

Touch a Truck on Saturday
Kuleana Education hosts a free Touch a Truck event on Saturday in the Kona Commons parking lot in Kailua-Kona.
Form 10 a.m.-noon, kids of all ages are invited to explore and meet the people who operate trucks and build, protect and serve on the Big Island.
Touch a Truck offers children a hands-on opportunity to experience big trucks including emergency vehicles, military, construction and more.

Royal Tea Party benefits Hospice of Kona
The ninth annual Hospice of Kona Royal Tea Party will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday at Four Seasons Resort, Hualalai.
A fundraiser for Hospice of Kona’s residential hospice home, Nakamaru Hale, the event features a traditional high tea with a Hawaiian twist as the chef creates mini sandwiches, pastries, scones and much more with local fruits and vegetables.
