Alii Challenge six-mile open water swim

The 31st annual Alii Challenge, a six-mile open water ocean swim will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday at Keauhou Bay and finish at Kamakahonu Beach next to the Kailua Pier. Race divisions will include individual (M/F), two-person relay teams (M/F/mixed), youth (under 20 years), open (20-44 years), and masters (45-65 years). Big Island Cyclocross race

Race No. 2 in the Big Island Cyclocross race series will be held at the north parking lot of the gym and under the lighted fields at the Old Airport Park on Sunday. Start time for the free event will be at sunset with on-site registration held 5:30-6:30 p.m. Early sign-up is available on the Facebook page Big Island Cyclocross or @bigislandcx. HIBT looking for volunteers

The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s tournament. Volunteers are needed Sept. 7-17 for a variety of tournament support including Kailua pier operations, pre and post-tournament set up and breakdown, headquarter administration, security and a whole lot more.

Interested volunteers should plan to attend the HIBT Volunteer Orientation on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Ocean Seafood Restaurant, located in the King Kamehameha Mall on Kuakini Hwy.

HIBT event headquarters, retail and tournament control will once again be anchored at Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, located adjacent to Kailua Pier. The 58th annual HIBT runs Sept. 9-17.

Waimea Athletics accepting Biddy Basketball registration

Waimea Athletics is currently accepting registration for Biddy Basketball until Friday for kids ages 5/6 and 7/8. Fee is $30 per person and includes full sublimation uniform set, electronic league photo and team equipment.

LavaKids Family Fun Runs

On Saturday, August 19th, LavaKids, in partnership with Club Rehab, will host its Family Fun Runs at 7 a.m. on Ane Keohokalole Highway beginning at the West Hawaii Civic Center. This is a free event and open to all ages.

Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m.

A one-mile run/walk, 2-mile run/walk and 5k run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m. This event is open to both keiki and adults.

Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5k for parents wanting to participate.

Hawaii Triple Crown of BJJ

The Kona Open, the seventh leg of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will take place Saturday, Aug. 19 at Kealakehe High School. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and entry fee is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Kids five and under get in free.

Advanced basketball training program

The Advanced basketball Training Program will be held Aug. 19 and 26 The Old Kona Airport’s Kekuaokalani Gym.

Training is from 9:30 a.m. to noon and is free to all kids ages 10-17.

This year round program is only for experience players. For more info call 327-3553.

Learn to racewalk

Free racewalking clinics will be held at Old Airport Park’s Makaeo Walking Path on Sept. 9 and Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. The lessons are provided by Stan Chraminski. For more information email stanski@twc.com.

Kukio Blue Water Swim

The 12th annual Kukio Blue Water Swim will be held at 8 a.m. on Sept. 23 at Kua Bay. A light breakfast and an awards ceremony will follow the 1.2-mile race from Kua to Uluweuweu Bay at Kukio.
