Keauhou hosts Ala Kahakai Long Distance Canoe race
Keauhou Canoe Club hosted the first Ala Kahakai Long Distance race on Saturday. The 32 mile paddling event ran from Anaehoomalu Bay to Keauhou Bay, over part of what is known as the Ala Kahakai Trail. The Ala Kahakai Trail runs through over 200 ahapuaa, from the mountain to the sea, and connects many people along the way.
The event also doubled as a qualifying race for men and women crews intending to paddle in the Molokai Channel in late September and early October. To qualify, a crew must compete in an event over 26 miles with open ocean changes.
In the Unlimited Open 9 men’s division, the Keauhou Canoe Club crew of Hunter Anderson, Bruce Ayau, Bill Balding, Jerry Bess, Ian Foo, Kevin Lindsey, Lyle Palakiko, Geordan Purdy and Paul Steiter took first place with a time of 3 hours, 59 minutes and 14 seconds.
The Keauhou crew of Steve Berengue, Chad Cabral, Nathan Grocholsoki, Theodore Ireland, Kyle Keamo, George Leslie, Theron Ogata, Justin Warren and Nue Youderian placed second at 4:30:57.
In the Non-Koa Open 12 men’s division, The Red Bull Waa crew of Eddie Aldridge, Daniel Chun, Chevise Conte, Trey Cox, Puni Freitas, Earl Kam, Kekoa Kau, Keakua Nolan, Hearii Mama, Heiva Paiea, Kainoa Tanoai and Mesepa Tanoai finished first in a time of 4:00:07.
In second place with a time of 4:47:16 was the Keauhou/Hawaii Canoe Club crew of Stephen Arnett, Lin Cox, Lance Cushenberry, Lou Dionese, Scott Ferry, Tom Guerin, Grant Kojima, Spencer Lavea, Lambert LeeLoy, John McCandless, Stephen Payne and Frank Zajac.
In the Non-Koa Open 12 women’s division, the Puna Canoe Club of Evonne Amantiad-Williams, Alana Cabatu, Kristal Del Rosario, Angela Faanunu, Julaine Keamo, Elise Martin, Rosa Motta, Michele Padayao, Harriet Parsons, Marni Rem-Geachy, Charlee Rowe and Susan O’Shaughnessy won in a time of 5:09:10.
LavaKids Family Fun Runs
On Saturday, August 19th, LavaKids, in partnership with Club Rehab, will host its Family Fun Runs at 7 a.m. on Ane Keohokalole Highway beginning at the West Hawaii Civic Center. This is a free event and open to all ages.
Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m.
A one-mile run/walk, 2-mile run/walk and 5k run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m. This event is open to both keiki and adults.
Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5k for parents wanting to participate.

Hawaii Triple Crown of BJJ
The Kona Open, the seventh leg of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will take place Saturday, Aug. 19 at Kealakehe High School. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and entry fee is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Kids five and under get in free.
Advanced basketball training program
The Advanced basketball Training Program will be held Aug. 19 and 26 The Old Kona Airport’s Kekuaokalani Gym.
Training is from 9:30 a.m. to noon and is free to all kids ages 10-17.

Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo
The 43rd annual Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo will lasso in two days of rodeo events Sept. 2-3 at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea.
The action-packed weekend is held annually as a fundraiser to provide educational scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees.
Family-style fun begins on Sept. 2 at noon with rodeo events, which may include everything from team roping, double mugging, po’o wai u, bull riding, junior bull riding, wahine barrel racing, wahine breakaway roping and more.
Always fun and exciting to watch is the century team roping competition when one team member must be over the age of 50 and their combined ages must be more than 100. The crowd is always on its feet for the keiki barrel racing for participants 12-and-under and the calf scramble.
On Sept. 3 the Round-Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch, will be hosting a live horse auction. Come at 9 a.m. to register and view the horses, with the auction to follow the Sunday morning Rodeo slack.
For non-riders, come and experience the fast pace of a Ranch horse auction. There will be a gate ticket fee to attend the auction.
Sunday’s rodeo action begins at noon with more excitement throughout the afternoon.
Food and refreshments will be available both days with ongoing events lasting until 5 p.m.
In addition, a variety of vendors will be on hand both days selling items including western style crafts, clothing and much more.
Tickets are $7 per person in advance from the Parker Ranch Store, located at the Parker Ranch Center and at the Parker Ranch Headquarters in Waimea, or they can be purchased for $8 at the gate on rodeo days. Children 12-and-under are free.

Learn to racewalk
Free racewalking clinics will be held at Old Airport Park’s Makaeo Walking Path on Sept. 9 and Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. The lessons are provided by Stan Chraminski. For more information email stanski@twc.com.
Kukio Blue Water Swim
The 12th annual Kukio Blue Water Swim will be held at 8 a.m. on Sept. 23 at Kua Bay. A light breakfast and an awards ceremony will follow the 1.2-mile race from Kua to Uluweuweu Bay at Kukio.
