Mercedes Duran

Mercedes Duran, 91, of Honolulu and formerly of Hilo, died July 14, 2017, at the Kuakini Medical Center on Oahu. Born in Hilo, she was a custodian at Hilo International Airport.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 17 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for a 10:30 a.m. Mass. Burial to follow at Mauna Kea Memorial Park. The family requests casual attire be worn and that flowers be omitted.

She is survived by sons, Richard Paglinawan and Sam Paglinawan, both of Hilo, Albert (Christy) Paglinawan, of Bismarck, North Dakota, and Francis (James) Duran of Honolulu; hanai son, Jose Michael Nistal III, of California; daughters, Thelma Labuen of Los Angeles, California, and Venancia (Carlson) Mun and Tita Anne (Michael) Duran-Raymond, both of Honolulu; 25 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, 33 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a cousin.

Margaret Fernandez

Margaret Cabral Fernandez, 92, of Honokaa, died Aug. 3, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. Born March 19, 1925, in Haina, Honokaa, she was a bartendress/waitress for the former Andrade’s Bar and Café, and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. on Aug. 19 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial to follow at Honokaa Catholic Cemetery. The family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by children, Clinton Fernandez and Cynthia (Dennis) Torres, both of Honokaa, Margaret (George) Simao, of Eleele, Kauai, and Roxann Fernandez, of Hilo; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jeremiah Hoaeae Sr.

Jeremiah Luaiki Hoaeae Sr., 66, of Honaunau, died July 31, 2017, at Straub Hospital. Born Dec. 29, 1950, in Koolauloa, he was Pastor for South Kona Assembly of God in Honaunau and member of the Hawaii District Assemblis of God and Kona Ministers Fellowship.

Friends may call at 1 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Kona Faith Center, 81-6224 Mamalahoa Highway in Captain Cook, for a 2 p.m. service; reception to follow at South Kona Assembly of God in Honaunau. The family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

He is survived by wife, Olga Hoaeae, of Honaunau; daughters, Jessica (Nahinu) King, of South Carolina, Jennifer (Daniel) Hoaeae-Lewis, of Augusta, Georgia, and Joy (Michael) Smith, of Honaunau; son, Jeremiah (Roxanne) Hoaeae, Jr., of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister, Anna Perry, of Arizona; brothers, Michael (Pacita) Hoaeae and Nathan (Verna) Hoaeae, both of Honolulu; 11 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Loretta Matias

Loretta “Mama Kim Chee” P.N. Matias, 89, of Waimea, died July 21, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born on July 18, 1928, in Kohala, she was a housewife, former owner of Kohala Kim Chee and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kohala Ward.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. on Aug. 19 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kohala, for a service. The family requests casual attire.

She is survived by sons, Edwin Akana Jr., of Waimea, Philip (Sherie) Akana, of Mililani, Oahu and Gerald Akana, of San Diego, California; daughter, Debra (Richard) Holcomb, of Washington, D.C.; brother, Donald (Mekyung) Liu, of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Diana Bree, of Kona, Dorothy (Tom) Lapke, of Honolulu, Oahu, Elsie Iriguchi, of Indonesia and May Lee, of Honolulu, Oahu; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and cousins.

Elaine Powers

Elaine Antoinette Adrian Powers, 81, of Waipunalei (Laupahoehoe), died July 15, 2017, at her home. Born March 31, 1936, in Laupahoehoe, she worked for Dole Pineapple Factory in Honolulu, was a janitor for C.W. Maintenance Co., custodian/groundskeeper for Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, bus driver for Laupahoehoe Transportation Co., and member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Laupahoehoe.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 7 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 8 a.m. Aug. 19 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Laupahoehoe for a 10 a.m. Mass. Urn burial follows in the church cemetery. The family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by daughters, Marie Andrade, Katherine (Joel) Himalaya, and Peggy Powers Downing; son, Everett Powers; hanai son, Elwood Adrian; brother, John (Andrea) Adrian Jr.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn Yamamoto

Marilyn Fusae Yamamoto, 67, died Aug. 5, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. She was born July 5, 1950, in Honolulu.

Friends may call at 1 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Onekahakaha beach (pavilion #4) in Keaukaha for a service.

She is survived by cousins, Leilani Chung, Suzanna Nolan, Alberta Foley, and the children of Fern Kalehuamaknoe Prim Pule.

Stanley Randolph

Stanley Marple Randolph, 90, of Hilo died July 30, 2017, at the Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Santa Cruz, California, he retired from United Airlines, operated various businesses in the former Kaikoo Mall and Prince Kuhio Plaza including The Puka Jewelry Store, Boomers Fountain and Hilo Bay Outfitters, and a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.

Private services will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Hilo c/o Pohai Malama Hospice Facility (1011 Waianuenue Ave., Hilo, HI 96720).

He is survived by hanai son, Stephen (Cynthia) Debus, of Hilo, and several cousins.

Patrick Salvador

Patrick B. Salvador, 55, of Naalehu, died July 22, 2017, at home. Born in the Philippines, he was a laborer for Mac Farms of Hawaii.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 19 at Naalehu Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial to fopllow at Naalehu Cemetery.

He is survived by wife, Milagros Salvador, of Naalehu; son, Mark Salvador, of Naalehu; daughters, May(Alberto Salmo) Salvador, of Naalehu, and Febelyn Salvador, of Kona; brother, Alfredo (Levanda) Salvador Jr., of Kona, sisters; Narcisa (Richard) Pedrena, of San Diego, California, Bernadette (Jay) Hashimoto, of Hilo, and Paz (Julito Balais) Salvador, of Honolulu; two grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sally Miyakaku

Sally Toshiko Miyakaku, 99, of Hilo, died July 30, 2017, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Papaikou, she worked at the family business, Maebo Noodle Factory and was a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Buddhist Women’s Association.

Private services were held. The family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by daughter, Lori (Ernest) Medeiros, of Hilo; sisters, Chisato Holck, of Kailua, Oahu, and Yoshie Masada, of Kapaa, Kauai; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Katherine Alcoran

Katherine Rubio Alcoran, 95, of Keaau, died July 31, 2017, at home. Born Feb. 21, 1922, in Paukaa, she was a retired equipment operator for Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Co.

She is survived by daughters, Patricia (Clyde) Birnbaum, of Austin, Texas, Kathleen (Michael) Jenness, of Waimea, and Dolores (Ned) Shimabukuro, of Keaau; sons, Andrew (Penny) Alcoran, of Laupahoehoe, and Robert Alcoran, of Kona; sisters, Anne Camacho and Dorothy Ah Sing, both of Hilo, Shirley Cecconi, of Tennessee, and Rose (Frank) Martinez, of Honolulu; brother, Robert (Clara) Rubio, of Maine; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces.

Jeremiah West

Jeremiah O. West, 35, of Pahoa, died on July 28, 2017. He was born Jan. 19, 1982, in Palmer, Alaska.

He is survived by his parents, William and Johanna West, of Pahoa; grandfather, George West, of Gulfport, Mississippi; brothers, Joshua West, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Joel West, of Pahrump, Nevada.

Calvin DeRego

Calvin James DeRego, 52, of Honokaa, died July 24, 2017. Born Sept. 22, 1964, in Honokaa he was a boat builder at Alii Kai boats.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. on Aug. 19 at New Hope in Waimea for a visitation following by a motorcade to Spencer Beach Park for lunch, sharing of memories and music.

He is survived by mother, Verna DeRego; brothers, Terry (Syvell Tasaka) DeRego and Dennison DeRego; sons, Crimson DeRego and Ikua (Samantha Sund) Purdy; daughters, Princess (Conn Wallmen) DeRego, Iliana Purdy, Precious DeRego and Kulia-Kaulele Purdy; grandson, Zayne Wallmen; numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.
