KAILUA-KONA — Three people were taken to the Kona hospital Wednesday afternoon after a traffic collision on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near mile marker 88.

The head-on collision involved a full-size truck and sport utility vehicle, according to a Hawaii Fire Department press release.

The first units from the Kailua, Captain Cook and South Kohala stations arrived on the scene shortly before 5 p.m.

Responders used the jaws of life to pull the truck’s driver, who was reportedly critically injured, and taken to Kona Hospital for medical treatment. The SUV’s driver, a man in his 60s, and a female passenger in her 30s were also taken to the Kona Hospital.

The extent of their injuries was unknown, according to the release, bit the passenger “appeared critical.”

Hawaii Police Department will continue their investigation, the release added.
