UH professors to discuss ancient Hawaiian adzes
University of Hawaii at Hilo Professor of Anthropology Peter Mills will present an overview of his work with Geology Professor Steve Lundblad studying the dispersal of ancient Hawaiian stone tools throughout the islands at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Hilo.
Using nondestructive energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) to study the dispersal, their work has helped define the role of the Maunakea adze quarry and other stone tool quarries in ancient Hawaiian economies, inter-island voyaging, and trade.
This free lecture will be held at the UH Hilo Science and Technology Building room 108. On-campus parking is available and it is free after 4 pm.
Mills, Ph.D., is an archaeologist who has been making his own stone tools since the 1980s, and who focuses broadly on issues of Hawaiian culture from pre-contact and colonial eras. He has been teaching at the University of Hawaii at Hilo since 1997, is a former chair of the Department of Anthropology, and is currently serving as Program Chair of the university’s new M.A. in Heritage Management.
The Maunakea Speaker Series is a monthly scholar-focused presentation offered as a partnership among the Office of Maunakea Management, Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Grace Community Church holds AWANA registration
Grace Community Church is offering keiki in grades 3 through 6 to attend its AWANA Club meetings this school year.
AWANA stands for Approved Workers Are Not Ashamed, taken from 2 Timothy 2:15. Awana Clubs are an opportunity for children to benefit spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally from weekly meetings.
Open registration is 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday at the church, 74-4889 Palani Road in Kailua-Kona.
Registration is required by Monday to assure the order for supplies for the Sept. 18 Kick Off Night. Space limited; first come, first served.
