VFW hosts meeting, football-watching event today

Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW Post 12122, is hosting a Marine Corps League meeting and football-watching event today.

At 11:30 a.m. today, the Marine Corps League will hold its monthly meeting. That will be followed by college football with all TVs showing games.

At 1 p.m. on Oct. 27, the VFW will host a professional football-watching event featuring a potluck.

The post is located behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street.

Liviang history farm to temporarily close

The Kona Coffee Living History Farm, one of Kona Historical Society’s historic sites, will be closed temporarily for preservation starting Monday and continuing through Sept. 5.

The farm will reopen at 10 a.m. on Sept. 6 with regularly scheduled hours and programs. The Hands on History program, Backyard Groceries: Sustainability in the Kitchen Garden, is scheduled for 11 a.m. that day.

This preservation project is being performed thanks to a grant by the Historic Hawaii Foundation and Freeman Foundation.

The H.N. Greenwell Store Museum in Kealakekua will be open while the farm is closed. The exhibit, “The Kona Coffee Story: Along the Hawaii Belt Road” is on display from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at this location.

On Wednesday, Healoha Johnston, assistant curator at the Honolulu Museum of Art, will be sharing her knowledge and insight on Hawaii art and artists for the August portion of the Hanohano O Kona community lecture series held 5:30-7 p.m. at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

The Kona Coffee Living History Farm is a 5.5-acre working coffee and macadamia nut farm in Captain Cook. The farm incorporates a living history program, artifact exhibition, historic building preservation, demonstrations of historic trades, coffee land and gardens cultivation, farm animal care, traditional games, Japanese foodways, and themes of sustainability with hands-on, experiential learning guided by trained and costumed historical interpreters.

Degree preparation workshop offered

Hawaii Community College — Palamanui will host a degree preparation workshop from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the North Kona campus.

The University Center, West Hawaii offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs from across the 10-campus University of Hawaii system. That means West Hawaii residents can obtain degrees from UH-Manoa, UH-Hilo and UH-West Oahu without leaving the Big Island.

The workshop, which will cover higher education options, distance learning, deadlines and more, is 90 minutes and is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Koali Building (A), room 106. RSVP online www.shidler.hawaii.edu/info-session.
