VFW announces week’s activities
Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW Post 1212, plans the following activity this week:
The Activities Committee will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Friday’s $7 meal will be pasta, salad and dessert with service from 5-7 p.m. The community is welcome to join.
On Saturday, the VFW will hold its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m.
The post is located behind Kona Locksmith, off Kaiwi Street.

Freemasons to meet
The monthly Stated Meeting of Kona Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons will be held on Wednesday at the Kona Masonic Center, 73-5577 Kauhola St., in Kailua-Kona.
The activities will begin with a dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7.
All members of the craft residing or visiting in the Kona area are invited to attend both the dinner and meeting.

Trails to close for ungulate control at Puu Waawaa
The trail at Puu Waawaa Mauka will be closed Saturday and Sunday and Sept. 16-17 while state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife crews will conduct an ungulate control program. On these dates hiking will not be permitted.
The ungulate control will be a nontypical ram and feral goat hunt, and will take place concurrently with the Makai muzzleloader season (following the Makai archery season, including State holidays).
The bag limit will be one (1) nontypical ram and two (2) goats (either sex) per hunter per day. During this program, the whole carcasses (entrails can be cleaned, but with attached genitalia on carcass) need to be inspected at checkout. For safety purposes, a maximum of 30 permittees will be allowed per day. Permits will be issued at the hunter check station on a first-come, first-served basis.
Hunters will need to purchase 2018 goat and ram tags to legally hunt these species in these areas. Tags may be purchased from any Hawaii Island Division of Forestry and Wildlife office and at the PWW Hunter Check Station during the hunt. Exact change of $10/tag (resident hunters) and $25/tag (nonresident hunters) is required when purchasing tags at the hunter check station.
Hunters are to check in at the Puu Waawaa check station beginning at 5 a.m. the day of the hunt and must be checked-out by 7:45 p.m. Camping is not allowed in the hunting area before or during the hunt.

HCC—Palamanui announces cafe schedule
Hawaii Community College — Palamanui kicks off its fall cafe schedule on Thursday.
This semester, first-year culinary arts students will offer a European- and Mediterranean-themed cuisine starting this Thursday. The first-year students will also offer luncheon service on Sept. 14 and 28; Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25; Nov. 8, 9, 15, 22 and 29. Cafe hours are 10:30 a.m.-noon in September and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in October and November.
Second-year students will offer a pre fixe menu focused on Asian cuisine on Oct. 6 and 13; Nov. 3 and 17 Reservations are required for the pre fixe luncheon. Call 969-8842 for reservations. Hours are form 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Cost is $20.
Woods earns degree
Jeremiah John Woods, of Keauhou, recently completed his bachelor’s degree in biology this spring from Eastern Oregon University.
The university awarded 639 bachelor’s degrees, 107 master’s degrees, five associate degrees and two certificates during the 2016-17 academic year.
