Project grad open house Tuesday
The Kealakehe Project Grad 2018 Planning Committee is forming now. An open house meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Kealakehe High School library. We invite parents and teachers of Kealakehe and WHEA High Schools to get involved by attending this informational meeting.
Project Graduation is an organized, adult-supervised, substance- and alcohol-free, all night event offered by many high schools across the nation as an alternative to student-run events involving alcoholic beverages or other drugs. Kealakehe Project Grad, a Hawaii nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation, serves Kealakehe and WHEA High Schools, as these schools share a graduation day.
Since the inception of this all-volunteer entity, there have been no graduate-related fatalities on graduation night.

Radio society potluck planned
The Kona Amateur Radio Society will hold a meeting from 2-5 p.m. Sept. 24 at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at NELHA.
All members, friends, and those interested in amateur (HAM) radio are invited. A potluck picnic will take place during the meeting and attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share. KARS continues to hold regularly scheduled meetings on the fourth Sunday of each month.
This month’s club meeting food theme will be Mediterranean. Please bring a favorite dish to share.

Historian to recount Kamehameha III era
At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Friends of the Libraries, Kona is sponsoring a program at the Kailua-Kona Public Library on the changes in ancient Hawaiian Land Tenure: “The Great Mahele.”
The event, known as Ka Mahele, covers a 10-year period in the reign of Kamehameha III when the king attempted to divide all the land in the islands between himself and 252 of the high born alii in an attempt to bring the kingdom into the modern world.
Come hear Boyd Bond, local historian and master storyteller, recount this change in Hawaiian culture and the success of the effort.

Looking for women who love to sing
Mele O Kona, a prospective chorus of Sweet Adelines International, is looking for women of all ages who love to sing! They are hosting an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20 at The Regency at Hualalai – above Kuakini Highway, 75-181 Hualalai Road by the poolside area.
They sing four-part a cappella harmony, barbershop style. No musical knowledge or ability to read music is required.

Daughters monthly meeting Thursday
Daughters of Hawaii/Calabash Cousins will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday on the grounds of Hulihe’e Palace. The meeting will focus on the reorganization of the Calabash Cousins, information of upcoming events and activities as well as the planned renovations of Hulihe’e Palace.
