A man suffered serious burns while trying to douse a structure fire that broke out Saturday in the Volcano area.

Responding to the 6:15 p.m. fire alarm, Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived at 11-3896 Nahelenani St. to find a single-story family home engulfed in flames, according to a media release.

A man and two minors were able to escape the home when it caught fire, according to the fire department. The man, however, suffered burns while trying to put the fire out and was transported in serious condition to Hilo Medical Center. The two minors, identified as only a male and female, did not have any noticeable injuries, but were transported by medics to the hospital for further evaluation.

The cause of the fire, which was declared extinguished at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, remains under investigation.
