Ala Kahakai Trail Association community meeting open to the public Saturday

The nonprofit Native Hawaiian-led association invites community members to attend the meeting from 3–5 p.m. Saturday at Hokuloa Church in Puako. The discussion will include the trail’s history and management, current and planned activities in South Kohala, proposed trail sign and kiosk locations in the Puako/Wailea area, and their partnership with the South Kohala Coastal Partnership.

The association welcomes ideas about how the trail can better benefit the community, issues and concerns. Pupus and light refreshments will be served.

Rat lungworm talk Thursday

A free presentation on advances in research and education on rat lungworm disease caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis will be given at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at North Hawaii Education and Research Center in Honokaa.

The guest speaker will be Kay Howe, who works with the Dr. Jarvi Lab and the Hawaii Island Rat Lungworm Working Group at the Daniel K. Inouye College at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Kohala Center field day offered

From 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sept. 23, a field day at The Kohala Center’s Demonstration Farm in Honokaa will include a tour, hands-on training and planting of an agroforestry system that’s designed to diversify crops, control weeds naturally and improve soil health.

The event is open to the public. High school students and teachers are especially encouraged to come learn about the upcoming fall High School Sustainable Agriculture Program.
