HTFG Conference starts Friday
The 27th annual Hawaii International Tropical Fruit Conference kicks off Friday and continues through Sept. 29 at locations on the Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai.
Geared to farmers, educators, orchard managers and proponents of sustainable agriculture, the eight-day event is presented by the statewide Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers and is open to the public.
The conference, “Facing Challenges,” offers a lineup of visiting researchers and agro experts sharing information and breakout sessions on a variety of topics. They include Ed Stover on “Huanglongbing and the U.S. Citrus Industry: Status and Ongoing Research,” Lindsay Basik on “Durian Cultivation Around the World,” and David Karp on the “History and Genealogy of Citrus.”
Hilo activities include UH, USDA and NASS updates, a report and survey on specialty crops, Q &A with guest speakers, Sunday tour of OK Farms with Brian Lievens, networking and fruit tasting.
Mini-conference activities on the other islands include farm tours and speaker presentations and meetings.

Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden meeting Saturday
Sarada Krishnan of the Denver Botanic Gardens will be the featured speaker at the Friends of Amy H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden annual membership meeting from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday at the Captain Cook garden.
The public is invited to attend the free presentation, which will be held beneath a tent in the heart of the garden. Afternoon activities will include free tours starting at noon, a brief membership meeting at 2 p.m., and Krishnan’s presentation, which will begin at 2:30. Her topic will be the value of ethnobotanical gardens in the 21st century.
Water and snacks will be provided.

KHS announces senior class pancake breakfast
Konawaena High School’s graduating class of 2018 will be hosting its Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser from 7-11 a.m. on Saturday at the school’s cafeteria. This event will help raise funds for the graduating class’s commencement ceremony and other class obligations.
Along with the pancake breakfast, a silent auction, rummage sale, baked goods sale, and a country store (plants and produce sale) will be available.
Cost for each pancake breakfast ticket is $8. Tickets are available at the event or may be purchased in advance from any senior class student.
