The Muliwai trail in north Kohala, will be closed for week-long trail maintenance, on Monday, Sept. 25-29. The camping area at Waimanu valley will also be closed for maintenance this week.
This is part of the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife’s routine upkeep of the Kohala forest reserve trail and campground, which includes maintaining proper function of the Clivus composting toilets, litter pick-up, removing fallen trees, clearing land slides and use of herbicide to control invasive plants. This trail and campground is closed and maintained about four times a year.
The nine-mile Muliwai trail zig-zags up the western wall of Waipio Valley, climbing approximately 1,200 feet to the plateau. It then leads across the plateau area to Waimanu, crossing 12 gulches that are up to 500 feet deep, then descends another 1,200 feet into Waimanu Valley, known for the beautiful Wai’ilikahi falls. It is only minimally maintained, steep, deeply eroded in placed, rocky, muddy, and slippery when wet. Only experienced hikers in good physical condition should attempt it.
