Kiwanis installation dinner Wednesday

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will hold it’s annual installation dinner for new officers on at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Makalei Golf Club, 72-3890 Hawaii Belt Road, Kailua-Kona, 325-6625.

Woodturners host magician

On Saturday eccentric turning magician Mark Safiri will be hosted by West Hawaii Woodturners from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the former PacRimGlass building, top of Kohanaiki Industrial road.

Massage therapist heads brain injury support meeting

The Brain Injury Support group will be meeting from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 11 at Hawaiian Rehab Services. The location is just mauka of the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Street.

Invited are all brain injury, stroke or other neuro-trauma survivors, their families and caregivers, interested professionals and the public. The speaker will be Jesse Houlding LMT, massage therapist.

Jesse found that massage therapy became very important after he suffered a spinal injury while surfing on Christmas in 2005. He worked with several massage therapists who eased his pain and ultimately helped him to walk properly again.

Bowling challenge looking for teams

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii will hold an inaugural Bowl for Kids Sake, West Hawaii from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 28 at KBXtreme in Kailua-Kona. The “Bowl-a-Ween” will be a fun celebration while raising money in the community.

55-plus seniors to meet in October

The group meets at Hale Halawai. Oct. 4 will feature a birthday celebrations, crafts for the holiday sale as well as practice for ground golf. Oct. 11 will not have a meeting, but Oct. 18 a health care speaker will make a presentation. Oct. 25 will feature a movie at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

Vietnam commemoration seeks vets

The public is invited to a welcome home ceremony for Vietnam vets — a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War on Nov 9. It begins at 10 a.m. at the Edith Kanakaole multi-purpose stadium in Hilo.

A lunch will follow for vets.

Not too early to think Christmas

Sugarplums will dance in your head Dec. 2 at the festive Christmas with the Chefs. The annual holiday gala returns to the seaside grounds of Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel from 5:30-8 p.m.

Over 20 members of the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Kona Kohala Chefs Association will delight attendees with plates of expertly prepared savory cuisine and delectable holiday treats—all accompanied by handcrafted ales, choice wines and 100 percent Kona coffee.

The Bill Noble Trio jazzes up the evening for dancing under the stars fronting historic Kamakahonu Bay. A silent auction will tempt would-be Santas with an array of holiday gift ideas while supporting local businesses.

In its 29th year, the annual fundraiser benefits local culinary students attending Hawaii Community College—Palamanui and members of the Kona Kohala Chefs wanting to further their education.

Tickets are $90 presale, $95 at the door and available online at www.konakohalachefs.org. Tickets are available at Westside Wines, Kona Coffee &Tea, The Spoon Shop and Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
