The following activities are scheduled this week for Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW Post 12122, located behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street:
The Post now opens on Mondays at 2 p.m. for the football game.
Friday marks the 118th birthday of the VFW. Membership is open and welcomed to those who have served honorably in a conflict on foreign soil and been awarded a campaign ribbon. If you might have been a reservist in New Orleans, possibly you could qualify for the auxiliary.
The $7 Friday meal will be pulled pork sandwiches, salad and dessert with service from 5-7 p.m. The community is welcome to join.
Saturday is the VFW’s fundraiser at the KTA Super Stores parking lot in Kailua-kona. For a $10 donation, receive a plate comprising 1/2 pound of teriyaki beef, a scoop of rice and corn between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tickets are available from members, at the Post or the day of the event.

Lecture covers preservation of historical National Park sites
Archaeologist MaryAnne Maigret will be discussing the work of preserving historic and culturally significant stone structures at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park as part of Kona Historical Society’s free Hanohano O Kona Lecture Series on Wednesday in Kailua-Kona.
Maigret will discuss preservation of the cultural landscape of the lands the park encompasses including Hawaiian stone architecture, historic vegetation, and other elements that contribute to the significance and of this sacred site.
Maigret is an historic preservation specialist with an academic background in geography and cartography, and nearly 30 years experience in Hawaiian archaeology. She has earned degrees at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Hawaii, where she earned a master’s degree in geography. She has devoted the last 15 years to public service for the state and federal government and is currently the acting integrated resources manager at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park.
This presentation is part of KHS’s community lecture series held at the West Hawaii Civic Center on the last Wednesday of each month from 5:30-7 p.m. It features local and state speakers sharing knowledge of a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects.
Kona Historical Society is a community-based, nonprofit organization and Smithsonian Museum affiliate that has spent the past four decades collecting, preserving and sharing the history of the Kona districts and their rich cultural heritage within Hawaii.
