Summit to cover family homelessness
The Second Faith-Based West Hawaii Summit to End Family Homelessness will be held from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday in Kailua-Kona.
This event is free, open to the public, and will be at the Old Kona Airport Makeo Events Pavilion. It includes a continental breakfast and a lunch featuring Umekes.
During the summit, attendees will have fun while learning about ways to assist homeless families in our community. There will be door prizes, activities, learning opportunities, and problem solving. St. Michael’s Catholic Church will be awarded the Dr. Clifford D. Kopp Community Compassion Award.
Each person must RSVP, in order to get a head count for the food order.

DMAC hosts artist talk Thursday
The Donkey Mill Art Center presents an Artist Talk on the history of American studio furniture with Mark Sfirri from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday.
Sponsored by the Big Island Woodturners’ Guild, this event is free and open to the public. The evening will begin with an ohana-style potluck reception. Guests are requested to please bring a dish to share.
Up to and including the period of the arts and crafts movement, American furniture craftsmen copied, refined, or modified styles that were often historical and largely European. By the 1920s, some of the focus of American furniture design began to shift from an emphasis on the accepted styles of the era to singular work by individual makers. Wharton Esherick, George Nakashima, Sam Maloof, and Art Carpenter changed the course of the craft. In the 1960s and 1970s, the field exploded with new practitioners and the movement continues to this day. Mark Sfirri will trace the historical roots of this change and how American studio furniture evolved.
Sfirri studied furniture design under Tage Frid at Rhode Island School of Design. He designs and makes furniture and sculpture, mostly in wood, and incorporates lathe-turned forms on multiple axes in his work. He has lectured and demonstrated his techniques throughout North America and Europe, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. He has written 18 articles on design, technique, and history for a number of craft publications. In addition, he has run the Fine Woodworking Program at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, since 1981 and has received numerous awards and accolades.
