Little Fire Ant workshop Saturday
The Hawaii Island Landscape Association and the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension will host a free workshop to help you contend with Little Fire Ant infestations in the landscape.
It will be held 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hawaii Community College-Palamanui campus.
At this free workshop, conducted by the Big Island Invasive Species Committee, one will learn the signs of an LFA infestation, where to look for ants and how to maximize bait treatment using LFA behavior against them. How to choose the right products and treatment plans for various landscapes will also be covered.

SBDC holding Strategic Planning Workshop
The West Hawaii Small Business Development Center hosts a Strategic Planning Workshop on Saturday in Kailua-Kona.
“Strategic Planning: Finish the Year Strong to Kick Off 2018” runs from 9-11:30 a.m. During the workshop, participants will develop a framework to use a business’s results from 2017 to end the year strong and focused, set up for quarter one success, and manage what matters most. Speaker is Stephanie Beeby.

Soldiers to convoy
Soldiers of the 209th Aviation Battalion are scheduled to convoy from Kawaihae Harbor to Pohakuloa Training Area on Sunday and Tuesday between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. both days.
The convoy will be escorted by marked vehicles with rotating amber lights and signs. Motorists are asked to be alert and drive with care around convoy vehicles.
Literacy center seeks tutor
The Kona Literacy Center offers free, private tutoring to English-speaking adults and is currently seeking tutors. Interested persons may take part in a two-day training on Oct. 21 and 28. The training will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. both days at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Registration is required.

Hui Laulima monthly meeting slated
West Hawaii Hui Laulima will meet from 10:30 a.m.-noon on Oct. 6 at The Salvation Army, 75-223 Kalani St., in Kailua-Kona.
The Hui welcomes Angela Dean, CEO of Comunidad Latina De Hawaii, which is working to serve and connect Latino families in Kona.
The Hui Laulima (which translates to “groups working together) is a consortium of West Hawaii’s major health and human service providers, faith-based groups, community associations, businesses, government and concerned individuals. It was formed in September 1999 to encourage collaboration particularly around matters affecting West Hawaii’s youth and families. There are more than 50 organizations and individuals involved.

Preschool Story Time
Children (2-5 years old) and their adult caregivers are invited to join the Children’s Librarian at the Kailua-Kona Public Library for stories and learning activities that promote early literacy skills.

Kona Coffee Living History Farm to temporarily change hours
The Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook will be open from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on today and Thursday, and will be closed Friday, to prepare for Saturday’s Farm Fest Open House.
The farm’s hours will return to normal schedule starting Monday. It is normally open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
