Words and Wine Tuesday in Keauhou

Dave Fouts, Sheila Gallien and Sonia Martinez will be featured during Kona Stories Book Shop’s Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Keauhou Shopping Center.

Fouts was born and raised in the Midwest and had rarely been more than 50 miles from home until going into the Army at age 18. After college, he went to Alaska where he stayed until 2003, when he moved to Hawaii Island. In Alaska, Fouts worked various jobs, but mostly was in the field of education; much of that in the bush, living in isolated Yupik Eskimo villages. In Hawaii, he worked in the Honokaa schools as a counselor. Since retirement, Fouts enjoys writing, practicing Qi-Gong, meditation, going to the gym, beach time and chopping away at the vegetation on his 5 acres.

Fouts’ book, “Was This It?” is a mix of prose, prose poetry, and poems. Fouts calls this genre style “slipstream,” a crossover of science fiction, fantasy and literary fiction.

Gallien is a writer, surfer, single mom, newly minted “channel,” and fierce focus expert who lives on the Big Island. In January, in the depth of a six-week illness, she had the experience of beginning to “channel.” Skeptical at first, she finally surrendered, and began an intimate conversation with a higher consciousness.

Gallien’s channeled book, “Bridging Ascension,” questions and answers for the surprised ascender, is a playful and loving guidebook for the believer or non-believer about the ascension of the planet from a 3-D consciousness to 5-D and beyond.

Martinez was born in Cuba and has lived on Hawaii Island for the last 23 years. Through the years, she has owned kitchen/gourmet shops and cooking schools, including Akaka Falls Inn, which she and her son opened in 1994 and ran for several years. She subsequently fell into writing about food and cooking and since early 1999, she has been a freelance food writer and columnist.

Her third book, “Sonia Tastes Hawaii,” is a compilation of five years’ worth of columns. The articles and recipes found in “Sonia Tastes Hawaii” are inspired by her adventures and visits to all the farmers markets and community support agriculture farmers on Hawaii Island.
