Big Island B&G club gets major grant
In August, Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island was one of three statewide recipients of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs education grants.
The $250,638 grant is to implement BGCBI’s Mohala Ike Project, which will run through 2019. The Mohala Ike Project is designed to help club members ages 5 -17 succeed academically, by skillfully instilling lifelong learning habits in the youths of Hawaii Island communities.
The goal of OHA’s Educational Grant Program is to improve Native Hawaiian student proficiency in reading and math to improve their standardized test scores.
Make dreams come true with ice cream
A Dream Come True (ADCT) All-You Can-Eat Ice Cream party is back in Kona to benefit terminally ill children of the Big Island.
The fun-filled annual fundraiser will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Old Kona Airport Park Pavilion. Live entertainment, issuing of keiki cards, face painting and lucky number drawings will take place along with all the Meadow Gold ice cream one can eat, hot dogs, and drink also included in the $10 ticket. Children under 3 are free.
Founded in 1985 by personnel in the Hawaii County Fire Department, ADCT Hawaii has granted 83 Big Island children their dreams.
