Comedian Tom Clark offers 3 shows
Comedian Tom Clark will offer three shows this weekend on the Big Island.
The first show is tonight at Hilo Town Tavern followed by a show Friday at MyBar in Kailua-Kona. A final performance is slated Saturday at Kilauea Military Camp’s Lava Lounge. Clark will be joined by his wife, Stephanie Clark, as well as a cast of Big Island comedians for all three shows. The Kailua-Kona show will feature Justine Snow and Matt Pinstein.
All shows are hosted by Bryan Rupp and commence at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7.
Clark has appeared on such shows as TBS’s “Conan,” CBS’s “Late Late Show,” NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” “The Bob &Tom Radio Show,” and Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and has traveled coast to coast doing stand up and has performed internationally. He is also an actor and has appeared on such shows as NBC’s “Outsourced,” TNT’s “The Closer,” the Hallmark made-for-TV movie, “The Wish List and the movie “Big Miracle.”

Clown Party marks Friday the 13th
MyBar hosts a Friday the 13th Clown Party from 10 p.m. to midnight on Friday in Kailua-Kona.
There is no cover for this 21-and-older event that will also award a cash prize to the person with the best clown costume.

Tiffany’s Art Agency plans Collectors Reception
Tiffany’s Art Agency hosts a Collectors Reception from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday at the gallery in Hawi.
The gallery is featuring the works of award-winning woodworker, David Reisland.
A modern master of marquetry, Reisland’s fine woodworking features everything from detailed flowers to tropical fish. His ability to balance aesthetics and engineering to create beautiful furniture has earned him many awards, but its those intricate details that really set him apart.
His latest marquetry works go a step beyond with the use of transparent paints to bring the vivid colors of his subjects to life.

WCT opens new production Saturday
Waimea Community Theatre opens its newest production, “Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them,” on Saturday in Honokaa.
The play is by Christopher Durang and directed by Dave Merrin. It contains language and adult situations and is not recommended for children age 12 and younger.
Durang turns political humor upside down with this raucous and provocative satire about America’s growing homeland “insecurity.” “Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them,” tells the story of a young woman suddenly in crisis: Is her new husband, whom she married when drunk, a terrorist? Or just crazy? Or both? Is her father’s hobby of butterfly collecting really a cover for his involvement in a shadow government? Why does her mother enjoy going to the theatre so much? Does she seek mental escape, or is she insane? Honing in on our private terrors both at home and abroad, Durang oddly relieves our fears in this black comedy for an era of yellow, orange and red alerts.
Shows are slated 7 p.m. on Saturday and Oct. 21 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Honokaa People’s Theatre.

OKA performs in Honokaa
OKA performs Sunday at Honokaa People’s Theatre in Honokaa. Also planned is the monthly Ecstatic Dance event.
OKA draws upon their indigenous connection to place and country to create their signature Australian earth sound, a blend of influences spanning house, big beat, reggae-dub, roots, jazz and world music. It is a mash-up of dance and down tempo electro beats marinated in the mystical spirit of the Dreamtime.
Ecstatic Dance and Gong with DJ Rajasick is from 4:30-6:30 p.m., followed by a blessing with Lanakila and Pohaha I Ka Lani. OKA takes the stage at 6:45 p.m.

Local artist to discuss, demo work
Local artist Jeff Hill will share some reflections on being an amateur naturalist during “Confessions of a Fishwatcher” at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Following remarks, Hill will give a detailed demonstration of the techniques he employs, working with materials and creating the papier mache fish currently in the library’s display case.

Writer’s Group meets Tuesday
A Writer’s Group meets at 10 a.m.-noon on Tuesday at the North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau.
Facilitator Eila Algood, a poet and writer, will moderate the meetings to give participants a chance to practice writing, discuss writing skills, share their work, enjoy useful feedback and share the joys and frustrations of the writing life. Writers of all levels are invited.
Bring a pen and paper for writing.
The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month.

Pig N’ Swig benefits Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise
Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise hosts its second annual Pig N’ Swig fundraising event Oct. 21 at Makaeo Events Pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park in Kailua-Kona.
Proceeds from the evening, which runs 5-9 p.m., will benefit the Rotary Club to continue its youth scholarships in the arts and sciences, and community service projects in Hawaii.
In addition to ono grinds and pupu, there will also be Kona Brewing Co. beer, wine, pupu, coffee and dessert available. Also planned is a bacon cook-off featuring local chefs, live entertainment by LT Smooth and Friends, door prizes and live and silent auctions.

Halloween comedy show Oct. 21 in Kona
Three of Hawaii’s top legendary comedians Mel Cabang, Frank Delima and Andy Bumatai come together Oct. 21 for a hilarious, side-splitting comedy event in Kailua-Kona.

Kona Rocktoberfest returns Oct. 21
The fourth annual Kona RocktoberFest, an outdoor music festival featuring live rock ‘n’ roll bands, is next Saturday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Rock out, enjoy live music, get your chicken wings going for the chicken dance and come dressed to impress for the costume contests, with the winner taking home $250. Live performances by Bottle of Blue, Green Machine, Larry Dupio Blues Band and Kauz Of Affliction are slated.

‘Wahi Pana: Storied Places on Canvas’ on display
The 2017 Community Arts Exhibit “Wahi Pana: Stories Places on Canvas” remains on display through Oct. 30 at the Isaacs Art Center in Waimea.
The exhibit, which opened last week, features pieces by students ages 13 and older who participated in a 12-week summer art session taught by Scot Plunket and guest storyteller Kuulei Keakealani. Keakealani will offer three sessions from 4-5:15 p.m. on Oct. 25, 26 and 27.

Ceramic artists celebrate National Clay Week
Ceramic artist Zoe Johnson’s ceramic studio Porcelain Ocean presents Open Studio Days in conjunction with National Clay Week on Saturday and Sunday at her Waimea home studio, 65-1204 Kahawai St. in Waimea.
The free public event, which runs 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday, features Johnson’s ocean-themed ceramic art, as well as creations by Kailua-Kona ceramic artist Peri Enkin. They will give pottery-making demonstrations, talk about their careers in ceramics, and feature items for sale.
National Clay Week, which runs Oct. 9 through Sunday, is a nationwide event that celebrates clay, community and creativity.

Deadline approaching for KCCF exhibit, show
The submission deadline for Donkey Mill Art Center and the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival’s Kona Coffee Cultural Festival Exhibition &Juried Show 2017 is Saturday.
Amateur and professional artists of all ages were invited to submit works of art celebrating KCCF’s 47th anniversary illustrating the heritage of Kona Coffee through this year’s theme, “A Sip of Aloha.”
Artists of all ages, mediums and abilities were invited to submit their original works interpreting Kona’s coffee culture. Art must be on the theme of coffee, either by subject matter or medium. Express your love of coffee, your understanding of Kona Coffee heritage, use coffee in your artwork or tell a story about coffee cultural heritage through art. All visual art media are eligible (paintings, drawings, sculpture, carving, assemblage, fiber, ceramics, jewelry, and video). Only original art and handcrafted pieces will be considered so reproductions will not be accepted unless they are photographs or limited editions of hand-pulled prints.
The work must have been made in the last year and be ready for hanging or installation, including an attached wire for framed pieces. Matted work without frames will not be accepted.
Artwork must be submitted with an entry form, which can be obtained at https://tinyurl.com/KCCF2017, and entry fees of $10 per submission. Submission deadline and delivery of artwork to Donkey Mill between 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday.
Two jurors will award first-, second- and third-place cash prizes. The prizes will be awarded based on use of media, quality of the work, and presentation of the theme of Kona Coffee and Culture. In addition a People’s Choice Award will be given at the end of the exhibit, based on votes received.
This year’s jurors are internationally-known ceramic artist and educator Kate Jacobson and Donkey Mill’s Core Program Director and metalsmith Kristin Mitsu Shiga.
The juried exhibition will be on view Oct. 28-Dec. 15. An artist reception and awards presentation is slated for Nov. 11.

DMAC taking part in National Clay Week
The Donkey Mill Art Center is participating in National Clay Week Open Studios by hosting a ceramic sale and clay building demonstrations this weekend in Holualoa.
The sale will be both Friday, 3-6:30 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Special clay demonstrations will take place from on Friday only. This event is free for the public and appropriate for all ages.
National Clay Week Open Studios, is a nationwide event that celebrates clay, community and creativity. Studios all over the country will open their doors for demonstrations, lectures, and exhibitions. Donkey Mill Art Center has a long history with clay and has built a community around clay education, creation and appreciation.
For 17 years, DMAC has offered ceramics classes led by local masters and visiting artists from all over the world serving students of all ages. This two-day sale will expand that reach into the community with wares created by local ceramic artists making functional and sculptural art in clay. A wide range of styles and sizes will be represented, including work by Amber Aguirre, Carole Brammer, and Bret Caillarec as well as other talented artists connected to the center.
For those curious about clay process, this event will include demonstrations by ceramic artists including wheel throwing and handbuilding. Hands-on activities for youth will be part of this special opportunity to get to know clay, the center and the West Hawaii’s ceramic community.

Rumba dance series starts Friday
A three-week intermediate rumba dance series with Lance Oliver kicks off Friday in Kailua-Kona.
Participants should have at least six months experience in rumba. Classes are held from 7-8 p.m. followed by a one-hour dance party at the Soul Center on Pawai Place.
Sponsored by the Kona Ballroom Dance Club, the cost is $30 for the series or $12 per class. The cost to take part in the dance party only is $5.

Theater classes resume
Aloha Performing Arts Company will resume its roster of theater classes for all ages beginning Tuesday.
Artistic director Jerry Tracy’s “Tuesday Troupers” is an eight-week class for 8-12-year-old youngsters who can read. It begins Tuesday, and meets from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. each week through Dec. 5. Tuition is $80. The Troupers will focus on performances skills such as projection, articulation, and characterization. Tracy is assisted by Kira Kane, who will teach a short choreography routine as part of the performance which will be offered free to the public on the last class day.
On Wednesdays, Wendy Buzby will lead “The Little Theatre Club” for kids ages 4-7. The club will meet from 4:30-6:30 p.m. each Wednesday for six weeks, from Wednesday through Nov. 22. Buzby will focus on helping club members increase self confidence and develop basic social and performance skills. Tuition is $60.
Felicity Johnson will continue her popular “Intergenerational Acting” class on Thursdays from 2-4 p.m. This class is open to people of all ages, and will run from Oct. 19 to Dec. 7, with a free sharing show on the last class day. Tuition is $80.
All of the above classes will be held at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, and each will culminate in a free performance, open to the public, on the final class day.
In addition, Engela Edwards continues as adviser of Aloha Teen Theatre, which meets Fridays from 4:30-7 p.m. in Damron Hall, APAC’s alternate space, in the building adjacent to the Aloha Theatre parking lot. ATT is free and ongoing, and accepts new members between ages 13-18 at any time.

Learn how to make a friendship bracelet
Kira Kamamalu Art Studio and Gertrude’s Jazz Bar present a social artworking experience with Sid Nakamoto using sea glass and sterling silver wire to create a friendship bracelet from 5-9 p.m. on Wednesday.
The workshop includes all materials, instruction, and two glasses of beer or wine. Cost is $55; limit eight people with RSVP. The event is suitable for adults and teens. Teens get juice.
