Helen Gabriel

Helen Louise Gabriel, 73, of Honokaa, died Aug. 17, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Paauilo and worked as a park caretaker for Hawaii County Parks and Recreation. She retired in 2008. She also retired from the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa.

Visitation will be held from 8-10 a.m. Oct. 14 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Honokaa. Funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m.; burial to follow at Kukaiau Catholic Cemetery. Casual attire.

She is survived by, sister, Geraldine Gabriel of Honolulu; brother, Joaquin Gabriel Jr. of San Leandro, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Leo Garcia

Leandro “Leo” Calunga Garcia, 94, of Kailua Kona died Oct. 2, 2017. Born Feb. 27, 1923, in Ontario, Calif., he served our country in the Army, and worked as a car salesman.

Private services will be held.

He is survived by daughter, Kim Garcia of Kailua-Kona and two grandchildren.

Ethel Wakano

Ethel Shizuko Wakano, 76, of Hilo died Sept. 16, 2017, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Honomu, she was a retired office clerk for Okahara and Associates, legal secretary for Carlsmith, Carlsmith, Wichman and Case Attorney at Law and Case and Lynch Attorney at Law, and a member of Honomu Henjoji Mission and Anela Association.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers and no koden.

She is survived by husband, Keith Wakano of Hilo; sons, Cory (Sherry) Wakano, of Hilo, Clay (Cyd Miyashiro) Wakano, of Kaneohe; daughter, Carrie (Ryan) Tsukuda of Honolulu; brother, Stanley (Yuriko) Okano of Honolulu; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mieko Taniguchi

Mieko Taniguchi, 99, of Hilo, died Aug. 14, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born on Maui, she was president of the Hilo Candy Company and a member of the Puna Hongwanji Mission.

She is survived by son, Alan Taniguchi of Honolulu; daughter, Marion (Dennis) Morimoto-Shigeta of Hilo; sisters, Sumie Yagi of Japan, Mrs. Oishi of Japan; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

David Fox

David Michael Fox, 69, of Mountain View, died Sept. 27, 2017, at his residence. Born May 17, 1948, in Detroit, he was a carpenter, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and a graduate of Kauai Community College.

He is survived by spouse, Virginia “Nia” Van Phalan of Mountain View; brother, Michael David Fox of Volcano; an aunt; numerous nieces and nephews.

Masako Okamura

Mrs. Masako Okamura, 98, of Hilo, (formerly of Laupahoehoe), died Aug. 30, 2017, at her residence in Hilo. Born May 31, 1919, in Papaaloa, she was the retired proprietor of the former Okamura Dress Making Shop. She was a member of the Papaaloa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.

Private services held. No flowers.

She is survived by son, Gary Okamura of Laupahoehoe; brother, George (Nellie) Tanaka of California; sisters, Yoshiko Tomiyama of Pepeekeo, Tsuyako Fujitani of Pearl City, Elsie (Jim) Doherty of Florida and Carole (Hardy) Tsutsumi of Hilo; two sisters-in-law; numerous nephews and nieces.

Elsa Dacquel

Elsa Gancinia Dacquel, 53, of Honokaa, died Oct. 9, 2017, at Life Care Center of Kona. Born Oct. 19, 1963, in Cuyapo Nueva, Ecija, Philippines, she was a janitor for Brantley Center, and was a member of Honokaa Senior Citizen Group.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17 at Romeo and Imelda Justo’s residence at Camp New Stable in Honokaa.

She is survived by her mother, Florentina Dacquel of Honokaa; brother, Cristome (Susan) Dacquel of Honokaa; sisters, Lolita (Gideon) Abad, Virginia Agustin, Myrna (Amado) Ordonez, Corinne (Efren) Gonzales, and Imelda (Romeo) Justo, all of Honokaa; several aunts and uncles; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Margarita Asuncion Bartolome, 76, of Pahoa, died Oct. 4, 2017, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Oct. 17, 1940, in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was a homemaker and a papaya farmer in Puna and also a member of the Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawaii.

Friends may call from 8-8:45 a.m. Oct. 17 at the Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 9 a.m. celebration of Mass. Casual attire; burial at the Pahoa Catholic Cemetery.

She is survived husband, Danny Bartolome of Pahoa; daughters, Josephine Bartolome of Oahu and Imelda (Masa) Pagay of Keaau; sons, Jerry (Rachel) Bartolome of Oregon and Eddie (Cherrilynn) Bartolome of Keaau; three grandchildren; numerous cousins nieces and nephews.

Shinayo O. Watanabe, 93, of Honokaa died Oct. 1, 2017, at her residence. Born in Honokaa, she was retired from the former Hawaiian Holiday, Inc. and a member of the Honokaa Hongwanji Mission and its Buddhist Women’s Association.

Friends may call 3–4 p.m. Oct. 18 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 4 p.m. memorial service. Casual attire and no flowers.
