KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists on suspicious of driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Oct. 9 and Sunday.

So far this year, Hawaii Police Department officers have arrested islandwide 907 motorists, up from 863 during the same period last year.

Kona officers arrested the most drivers last week with 10 followed by Puna officers with five and South Hilo officers with three. Officers in South Kohala arrested two while officers in North Kohala arrested one.

To date there have been 907 DUI arrests island. Of those, 414 arrests were in the Kona District, 223 in Puna, 196 in South Hilo, 50 in South Kohala, nine in Hamakua, eight in Ka’u, four in North Kohala and three in North Hilo.

So far this year, there have been 27 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island public roads compared with 23 during the same period last year.
