An alternative to giving out Halloween candy

Decades ago, I read in the West Hawaii Today newspaper that a mom gave away pencils instead of candy. I tested it. I put out a bowl of candy and a bowl of pencils. Nobody touched the candy until the pencils were gone. I tried that again the next year and after that I just offered pencils.

Once, late on Halloween night in Ka’u, three teenagers came to my door. I apologized that all I had were pencils and one teen said, “you have pencils!?” “May we each have two?” They left very happy with their pencils. The article I read said that one person ordered special pencils for Halloween. This is a viable alternative to candy.
