Coffee festival volunteers needed

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is looking for friendly, reliable volunteers of all ages to help with events throughout the 10 days of festival fun. Volunteers can assist in a variety of ways, including event set up, execution and breakdown, survey taking, greeters, traffic control, venue maintenance and post event clean-up.

The 47th annual festival starts brewing Nov. 3-12. Volunteer positions are available starting Oct. 30 and continue throughout the festival.

Astro Day in Kona

Astro Day, an annual science and astronomy educational event sponsored by the Maunakea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC), is coming to Kona Commons 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 4.

AstroDay has been a tradition in Hilo for the past 16 years and this is the first time the event will be celebrated in Kona in the former Sports Authority space at Kona Commons, 74-5450 Makala Blvd, Kailua-Kona.

Observatories from Mauna Kea and Haleakala will be represented, as well as other technology, education, and cultural organizations. Highlights include Starlab — a portable planetarium provided by the Canada France Hawaii and Gemini observatories, solar viewing with experienced astronomers and more.

Tax Workshops Oct. 26 in Kona

The Department of Taxation’s 2017 Tax Workshops will be held across the state.

This year’s workshop topics include: an update on the 2017 legislative session and administrative rules, a presentation on where the state’s money comes from, and an online demonstration for verified practitioners.

“The department is excited to present its annual tax workshop and welcomes the tax community to attend,” said Maria Zielinski, director of taxation. “These workshops provide the department with an opportunity to engage with and hear from the tax community.”

All workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with registration starting at 8 a.m. The fee is $90 for individuals who submit their registration and payment by the registration deadline. Late registrations are $110 per person. Walk-in registrations will be accepted at the door on a space‑available basis. The fee includes a continental breakfast, workshop materials, and three hours of Hawaii Board of Public Accountancy Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit. Workshop materials may be separately purchased for $25 per set.

In Kona, it will be Oct. 26 at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii, 73-987 Makako Bay Drive.
