WAIMEA — Students in Parker School Dramatiques will present three performances of their upcoming show, “Mother Courage and her Children,” this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the historic Parker School Theatre.
Written in 1949 by German playwright Bertold Brecht, the play is set in 17th-century Europe during the Thirty Years’ War. The story follows Anna Fierling, a self-interested entrepreneur known as Mother Courage and her three children, Eilif, Swiss Cheese and Kattrin, as they barely make a living by following army regiments across conflict areas where they trade food and supplies. They meet various military personnel, civilians, refugees and peasants who, against the backdrop of violence and uncertainty, use whatever resources they have to survive.
Using Brechtian “epic theatre” techniques such as projection technology, original music and interaction with the audience, the playwright challenges all participants in the theatrical experience to examine the price of war: any war, in any century, including in our own time.
The show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Due to content and style, this production is recommended for audiences age 12 and older. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults for general seating. The box office and house open 45 minutes before curtain.
