During the week of Oct. 23-29, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Three of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 960 DUI arrests compared with 906 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There have been 1,129 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,172 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.7 percent.

To date, there were 26 fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 28 fatalities, compared with 22 fatal crashes (three of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 25 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an i ncrease 18.2 percent for fatal crashes and 12 percent of fatalities.
