KAILUA-KONA — Helping hands made for quick removal of a downed tree near the intersection of Kuakini Highway and Hualalai Road on Monday afternoon.

The royal poinciana tree situated on the mauka side of the highway across from the Kailua Village Condos fell shortly after 3 p.m., blocking the northbound lane of Kuakini Highway. Southbound traffic continued to flow normally, however, police were forced to detour northbound traffic onto Alii Drive causing traffic to snarl in areas.

Hawaii County Department of Public Works crews arrived on the scene shortly after the tree fell and with the help of people from nearby residences and businesses, the road was cleared and reopened to both directions of travel shortly before 5 p.m. Crews did have to temporarily close the northbound lane several times later in the evening to remove debris.

No injuries were reported and no property was damaged, police said.
