West Hawaii Little League baseball registration

West Hawai Little League will hold baseball registration for minors, majors, juniors and seniors on Nov. 17 from 4-6 p.m. at Pualani Park, and Nov. 18, 25 and Dec. 2 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Old Airport Park.

LavaKids Family Fun Runs

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and LavaKids, along with Club Rehab and Lavaman, in a joint venture with Peoples Advocacy Trails Hawaii, Hawai`i Public Health Institute, Hawaii Island Healthy Eating Active Living and other community organizations will hold runs on Nov. 18 to raise diabetes prevention awareness and celebrate the new trail wayfinding/mileage markers on the Queens’ Lei Trail.

Registration for the LavaKids Family Fun Runs begins at 7 a.m. at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Guest speakers will follow at 7:30 a.m. The Keiki 100 Yard Dash kicks off the Fun Runs at 7:45 with one-mile, two-mile and 5K run/walks immediately following on the Queens’ Lei Trail. This event is free and open to all ages with a purpose of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for the whole family through running or walking.

KHPC hosts Thanksgiving Toss Tournament

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club will hold its annual Thanksgiving Toss on Nov. 18 at the Kona Palms Courts horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park.

Anyone can enter this open, non-sanctioned doubles tournament — 50 point game, all points count. Higher ringer percentage players will be designated as “A” players. “B” players will draw an “A” player from the hat to be his/her partner.

Players of all levels are welcome. Enter your name by Nov. 13. Entry fee is $15 per player. Pay at check-in at 8 a.m. and pick your partner. Everyone wins. Prizes include hams, turkeys, bags of rice and much more.

Makalei GC Nine & Wine tournament

Makalei Golf Club is hosting a Nine & Wine tournament on Saturday, Nov. 18 in support of the Kaulua’e Foundation. The 9-hole, 2-person scramble format tournament will have a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. and cost is $40 per person.

Pupus, wine and awards will be held immediately following golf. In addition, there will be performances by the Kaulua’e Foundation.

Advance basketball training

Advance Basketball Training has released its November schedule. This year round program is open to athletes ages 10-17 with basketball experience. Training is held at the Old Airport Kekuaokalani Gymnasium from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Clinics will take place Nov. 18 and 25. For more info call Nish at 327-3553

Free racewalking clinics will be held at Old Airport Park’s Makaeo Walking Path on Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. The lessons are provided by Stan Chraminski. For more information email stanski@twc.com.

HCC hosts Out-n-Back Training Time Trial

On Sunday, Nov. 19 the Hawaii Cycling Club will host the Out-n-Back Training Time Trial/Sunday Ride starting at 7 a.m.

This is the sixth annual 19.5 mile Out-n-Back Training Time Trial. A non-competitive Sunday Ride will start shortly after the last time trial competitor.

Registration is from 6:30 to 6:45 a.m. on Pukiawe Street off of Kaiminani Drive.

The Out-n-Back starts at Kaiminani Drive and Queen Kaahumanu Highway, then travels North 13.5 miles to the 80 mile marker, makes a U Turn and returns to the 86 mile marker.

This event is free to 2016/17 and 2017 Hawaii Cycling Club members. Non-members will pay a $10 one-day membership fee. he annual membership fee is $20.

Participants and volunteers will gather at The Talk Story aid station after the event for food and beverages.

Wahine Polo Tournament

The Hope Lodge and American Cancer Society is hosting the 5th annual Wahine Polo Tournament at Waikii Ranch from noon-4 p.m. on Nov. 19. Admission is $5 per person.

Wobble Gobble Run/Walk and Canned Food Drive

The 13th annual Walua Road “Wobble Gobble” fun run and walk hosted by Big Island Running Company will take place on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23). This event starts at the Walua Road trailhead on Lako Street at 8 a.m.

Participants may choose to run or walk a 1-mile, 3.5-mile or 6.4-mile course. This is a free event, but it is suggested that all participants donate two cans of food, which will be given to the Hawaii Food Bank.

Beanie Heen Paddle Race

The Beanie Heen Paddle Race will be held Saturday, Nov. 25 at Surf Park in Kawaihae, near the breakwall. All vessels are welcomed to participate in the seven mile course.

Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.

Kona Country Club 50th anniversary tournament

The Kona Country Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a golf tournament on Nov. 26. Money will go to support the Kona CC Jr. golf program.

Entry fee is $98 for visitors and $78 for residents with Hawaii state ID. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and a shot gun start will follow at 8 a.m.

There will be gross and net winners in the two-person scramble format (40-percent of team handicap). There will also be a closest to the pin challenge and mulligans are available to purchase.

BIRC Couch to 5K

Big Island Running Company is offering a free Couch to 5K training program at the Alii Drive store.

This 9-week program is designed to take beginners from the couch to finishing the Jingle Bell Beach Run on Sunday, Dec. 17 at Coconut Grove Marketplace. No prior running experience is necessary.

Runs will take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. and Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., although runs can be completed individually as well.

BISA Youth Basketball Clinic

The Big Island Sports Academy will host a youth basketball clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Panaewa Park Gymnasium in Hilo on Dec. 9 for girls and boys ages 4-6.

The clinic will cover the basic concepts and all facets of basketball skill development, with an emphasis on fundamentals.

The clinic is being led by Big Island Sports Academy’s John Livsey, and youth basketball coordinator and former UH-Hilo standout Phranklin McKinney,

Cost is $25 per person. There will also be on-site registration at 8:30 a.m.

Jingle Bell Beach Run

Hawaii Sport Events presents the 13th annual Jingle Bell Beach Run on Sunday, Dec. 17 at Coconut Grove Marketplace.

Start time for the Christmas themed event is 7:30 a.m. and will feature a 5K and Santa’s Keiki Dash.

This year’s charity will benefit the Kiwanis Club, a non-profit organization dedicated toward changing the lives of children in need through their involvement with youth programs and meaningful community activities on the Big Island.

Awards will be given to the top three in each category: Overall, 5-yr age groups, and best Christmas costumes. Lots of raffle prizes to follow.

Entry fee for the 5K is $30 until Nov. 30 and $35 until Dec. 15. There will be no registration for the 5K on race day. Santa’s Keiki Dash is free to children ages six and under.

Konawaena looking for softball coach

Konawaena High School is currently accepting applications to fill its vacant head softball coach position.

Preferred qualifications include a college degree, high school or college level coaching experience, and collegiate playing experience.

Minimum qualifications are a high school diploma, high school or community (club, league, youth) coaching experience.

All applicants must be able to pass a DOE legal background check, have a valid drivers license and social security card, and provide a current TB test certification.
