KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Fire Department is investigating five small brush fires that cropped up along Highway 270 Friday afternoon.

About 4:30 p.m., fire crews responded to two fires around mile marker 5 along the roadway, also known as Akoni Pule Highway.

Hawaii Fire Battalion Chief Ian Smith said both of the fires were suspicious in nature. Arson is suspected.

Three other brush fires were reported just south of mile marker 5. Smith said they are also suspicious in nature.

The fires were small and quickly extinguished. Smith said if the vegetation was brown and if the winds were high, it would have been a different story.
