For the first time, the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Hunter Education Program will be holding an advanced Hunter Education Game Care workshop. Ahead of the spring game mammal hunting seasons, two simultaneous hands-on workshops will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Jan. 13 at Hunter Education classrooms on Oahu and Hawaii Island.

This workshop is offered free of charge and is open to any Hunter Education graduate. The approximately four-hour-long workshop builds on game care principles covered in the basic Hunter Education course and provides real demonstrations on topics including: field dressing, deboning, meat preparation, and recipes. The workshop is offered in a hands-on, discussion style format intended to engage participants and promote interaction.

Each workshop is limited to 25 student, who need to pre-register and must have already completed their Hunter Education certification. Standbys will be accepted at each location on the day of the workshop. All students attending the workshop will receive a certificate of completion.

The workshop on Hawaii Island will be held at the Kamuela Hunter Education Classroom located at, 66-1220D Lalamilo Road in Waimea.

2018 park closure schedule announced

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation announces its 2018 closure schedule for Ahalanui Park, Isaac Kepookalani Hale Beach Park, Kahaluu Beach Park and Spencer Park at Ohaiula Beach.

Monthly closures are necessary to maintain and repair high-use parks without exposing park patrons to potential hazards associated with large-scale maintenance work.

Located in North Kona, Kahaluu Beach Park will be closed until 10 a.m. on the first or second Tuesday of each month. The closure dates are: Jan. 9, Feb. 6, March 6, April 10, May 8, June 5, July 10, Aug. 7, Sept. 4, Oct. 16, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4

Located in South Kohala, Spencer Park at Ohaiula Beach will be closed all day on the following dates: Jan. 10-11, Feb. 7-8, March 14-15, April 11-12, May 15-17, Sept. 11-13, Oct. 17-18, Nov. 14-15 and Dec. 12-13
