In “Livin’ on a Rock,” some of Hawaii Island’s best musicians tell the story of Hawaii’s music scene in their own words. Filmmaker Steve Roby, Snap Judgement Films, interviewed 25 musicians and industry professionals for the new documentary, including North Kohala slack key master John Keawe, Grammy Award winner Charles Michael Brotman and Gary Washburn, the 40-year director of the Honokaa Jazz Band.
Also featured are the one-man band Bosco, Brad Bordessa, Dagan Bernstein, Mikey Fiyah, Chuck Gessert, Tomi Isobe, Hannah Kaplan, Lifeinpursuit, Bub Pratt, Lopaka Rootz, Ronnie V, Russell Ruderman, Richard Russell, Scott Reagan, Rachael Scott and Greg Shirley, co-owner of Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kailua-Kona.
There will be free screenings of “Livin’ on a Rock” at Kukuau Studio in Hilo on Friday and at Honokaa People’s Theatre on Tuesday; both screenings at 6 p.m.
Roby began production in January, gathering interviews from Kona, Waimea, North Kohala, Ahualoa, Honokaa and Hilo. Many of the concert performances in the film come from the three-day Ohana Fest in Waikoloa last August.
He curated the interviews with archival photos from North Hawaii Education and Research Center and spectacular drone videos from the Hawaii Visitors Bureau.
