KAILUA-KONA — A woman visiting from Alaska was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly striking her boyfriend with a rental car that day.

The woman, 30-year-old Crystal Young, is being held at the Kealakehe Police Station pending further investigation, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Maj. Robert Wagner said police responded Friday afternoon to the runway area of Old Kona Airport Park, where officers reportedly determined Young had been involved in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend, a 36-year-old man, also visiting from Alaska.

Young was reportedly “driving reckless, doing doughnuts with the vehicle,” said Wagner, while the man was outside the vehicle.

Young allegedly drove straight for the man and struck him, causing significant injuries to his body and head.

Wagner added that the man was taken to Kona Community Hospital before being flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he remained in critical condition as of Saturday evening.

Saturday night, Wagner said, the suspect was charged with attempted murder in the second-degree as well as abuse of a family member, reckless endangering, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid. A bail amount was not available at press time Saturday night.
