At 7 p.m. Jan. 5, theoretical astrophysicist Kip Thorne will explain the science behind his movie, “Intersteller,” at a free talk in the Hale Hoaloha Pavilion at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel.

He is one of three scientists who recently won the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics for their instrumental roles in the very first detection of ripples in space-time called gravitational waves. The film will illustrate how Dr. Thorne’s work made history and helped usher in a new era in astronomy. The Keck Observatory Astronomy Talk is supported by the Rob and Terry Ryan Foundation.
