20 DUI arrests in week leading up to Christmas

During the week of Dec. 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 1,135 DUI arrests compared with 1,088 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.3 percent.

There have been 1,336 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,416 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

To date, there were 30 fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 32 fatalities, compared with 27 fatal crashes (five of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 32 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase 11.1 percent for fatal crashes.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.

Another Hawaii bank announces employee bonuses, higher wages

HONOLULU — Another bank in Hawaii has announced plans to give employees bonuses and raise its minimum wage, marking the fourth bank in the state to do so.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the Central Pacific Bank on Sunday announced it would give $1,000 holiday bonuses to its entire workforce, excluding executives on its managing committee.

The state’s fourth largest bank says it will raise its minimum wage to $15.25 per hour starting on Monday. Officials say the higher wage would affect about 126 of its approximately 850 employees.

First Hawaiian Bank, Bank of Hawaii and American Savings Bank previously announced they would give employee bonuses of at least $1,000 and raise minimum wages to at least $15 per hour.

Info on vehicle theft wanted

Hawaii Island police are investigating the theft of a Land Pride utility vehicle in North Kohala.

According to police, the theft occurred between 5 p.m. Dec. 22 and 8:15 a.m. Dec. 26.

Suspect(s) entered onto the property at Kohala Plants nursery and stole the vehicle which was parked under a tent.
