Proud parents Marcus Perez Sr. and Monique Temple welcomed the Big Island’s first baby of the new year.

Marcus Perez Jr. was born to the Naalehu couple at 12:51 a.m. Monday at Hilo Medical Center.

The state’s first baby of the year was born at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Franklin Wilde Wilson weighed at 8 pounds 13 ounces, according to KHON-2.

Kona Community and North Hawaii Community hospital reported no births as of press time Monday.
