Ernesto Tuliao

Ernesto De Vera Tuliao, 79, of Hilo, died Dec. 20, 2017, in Bacnotan, La Union, Philippines. Born on April 10, 1939, in Barangay Tuliao, Sta. Barbara Pangasinan, Philippines, he was a retired cane truck driver for Hamakua Sugar Plantation Company and worked for Suisan Fish Market in Hilo. He also was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call 9-11 a.m. Jan. 8 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for an 11 a.m. prayer service. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed. Burial at 1:30 p.m. at Homelani Memorial Park.

He is survived by wife, Genevie Tuliao of Hilo; daughter, Edna Tuliao-Olim of Las Vegas; son, Edgar (Wendi) Tuliao of Hilo; two grandchildren; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Paul Matsumoto

Paul James Hideo Matsumoto, M.D., 85, of Hilo, died Dec. 27, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kealakekua, he was a retired surgeon, a lieutenant and veteran of the U.S. Navy, and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Aloha Choir.

Friends may call at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a Rosary with service at 7 p.m. Friends may again call at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a Rosary with eulogy at 10 a.m. and Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial follows at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2. The family requests casual attire be worn and no monetary gifts and no carnations please.

He is survived by wife, Cora B. Matsumoto of Hilo; sons, Paul Miki Matsumoto of New York, Stephen (Melissa) Matsumoto of San Diego, U.S. Navy Commander David (Kimberly) Matsumoto of Naples, Italy; stepson, Grant Keolu (Kasie) Kailikea of Hilo; daughters, Ann B. Matsumoto of Honolulu, Maureen Matsumoto of Albuquerque, N.M., Joan (Stephanie Marsan) Matsumoto of Winthrop, Mass., Caroline (Dr. Aaron) Kauhane of Honolulu, Sarah (Mark) Kobayashi of Okinawa, Japan, Rachel (Dr. Lazarus) Gehring of Owego, N.Y., Christal Matsumoto of Hilo; stepdaughters, Cori L. (Kula) Oda and Joni M. (Brent) Hess of Hilo; sister, Yoko Futa of Honolulu; brothers, Larry Matsumoto of Quartz Hill, Calif., Kenneth (Janet) Matsumoto of Cypress, Calif.; 29 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Edith Worsencroft

Edith Mae Worsencroft, 89, of Honomu died Dec. 15, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Pittsburgh and was a teacher’s aide and receptionist at E.B. da Silva Elementary and several other Hilo area schools, longtime member of the Sierra Club of Hawaii, Moku Loa Group.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles, Hilo for a celebration of life followed by a lunch gathering. No flowers, memorial gifts to the Sierra Club of Hawaii.

She is survived by sons, Kurt (Sylvia) Eschbach of Mililani and Karl Eschbach of Honomu; stepson, Samwise (Yasmine) Galenorn of Kirkland, Wash.; stepdaughters, Ann (Victor Munoz) Worsencroft of Lakewood, Colo., and Susan (Grant) Hallman of Bryan, Texas; two grandsons, two great-grandsons, four stepgrandchildren and one step-great-grandson. Dwight Sumida

Dwight Mitsuyoshi Sumida, 71, of Hilo died Dec. 14, 2017, at the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. He was born in Pahala and was a retired associate professor of animal science with the University of Hawaii at Hawaii Community College, a former assistant coach with Jimmy Yagi at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans Basketball team, member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Anela Nani Subdivision Kumiai.

Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 4 p.m. memorial service. Casual attire, no flowers.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Sumida of Hilo; son, Derek (Jennifer) Sumida of New York; daughter, Carie Sumida of New York.; brothers, Roy (Marilyn) Sumida of California and Cyrus (Myra) Sumida of Pahala; two grandchildren; numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Seijin Hokama

Seijin Hokama, 96, of Hilo, died Dec. 27, 2017, at Pohai Malama. He was born in Honolulu, and was a retired electrician for HT&T, a member of Hui Okinawa, Pohakulani Kumiai, SeniorNet, and Christ Lutheran Church.

A visitation will take place 10-11 a.m. Jan. 9 at Christ Lutheran Church for an 11 a.m. celebration of life. Urn burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park. Family requests casual attire, no flowers, and no koden. Online condolences: www.homelanimemorialpark.com
