Paint &Sip benefits Habitat for Humanity
A Paint &Sip event benefiting Habitat for Humanity Hawaii Island is this evening in Kailua-Kona.
Local artist Rya Horne will be teaching participants to paint “Kohala Sunflowers” from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Humpy’s Big Island Alehouse.
The $50 ticket to Paint &Sip includes all art supplies, two drink tickets, and a donation to Habitat for Humanity. If you don’t plan to paint, “sipper” tickets are available for $25.

West Hawaii County Band performs free concert
West Hawaii County Band offers its first 2018 free concert Friday evening at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.
The band will present a variety of songs to kick off the new year. The one-hour show starts at 6:30 p.m.
The performance is part of the band’s monthly Free Friday Concert Series sponsored by the Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Department and the West Hawaii County Band Friends, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
The West Hawaii County Band also performs 4 p.m. Sunday during Afternoon at Hulihee Palace.

Manoa DNA comes to Waimea
Manoa DNA performs Saturday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
The 6 p.m. Kahilu Theatre Gold Series show presents a treasured sound of both innovative and traditional Hawaiian music along with favorite harmonies of bands from then and now. Doors open at 5 p.m.
Kahilu Theatre’s Gold Series offers eventgoers an up close and personal experience of live music set against a backdrop of starry skies, indigo ocean views, and exquisite Hawaiian style hospitality.
Proceeds benefit Arts Ed @ Kahilu programs. Venue and directions will be provided.

Hui Kakoo Benefit Concert Sunday
Sean Naleimaile and Bert Naihe of Project Kuleana featuring the Hugs and Honi Hula Honeys headline a Hui Kakoo Benefit Concert Series performance Saturday at Keauhou Shopping Center.
The concert, a benefit for The Food Basket, starts at 5 p.m. Admission is two cans of food to be donated to the organization, which is Hawaii Island’s lone food bank. Each can beyond the minimum two for admission provides entry to win a prize from one of the series’ sponsors: Jam’s World, Kenichi Pacific, Paradise Found Boutique and Kona Stories.
Hui Kakoo is a monthly concert series held at Keauhou Shopping Center. Hui Kakoo means “Coming Together in Support.”

North Kohala library hosts teen night
North Kohala Public Library hosts a teen night Monday showing the movie version of Nicola Yoon’s book, “Everything, Everything” followed by a brief discussion comparing the book and movie.
Teens are encouraged, but not required, to read the book in advance of the film. The event runs 6-8 p.m. at the library in Kapaau. Books are available from North Kohala Public Library.

‘Art Walk at the Library’ Jan. 26
Naalehu Public Library hosts “Art Walk at the Library” from noon to 4 p.m. on Jan. 26.
The art walk, held the last Friday of each month, will feature a local artist who will showcase their artwork on the library’s lanai, and will be available to answer questions about their work and techniques.
The featured artist for the Jan. 26 event will be potter and sculptor Olivia Ling.

Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum concert benefits Aloha Theatre
Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum return to Aloha Theatre for a 7:30 p.m. performance on Jan. 27.
Lewis and Rozum are widely regarded as being among the preeminent bluegrass and Americana artists of our time. They formed a musical partnership in 1986, when Rozum joined Lewis’s band, Grant Street. Between them, they have recorded more than 20 albums, as a duo and with their many talented musical friends, including their 1995 Grammy-nominated album “The Oak and the Laurel.”
Their latest release, “The Hazel and Alice Sessions,” delves into the repertoire of Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerard, two trailblazing women of bluegrass music, and was nominated for a 2017 Bluegrass Grammy Award.
The Jan. 27 performance is a benefit for historic Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.

Kona Choral Society plans open house rehearsal
The Kona Choral Society is holding an open house rehearsal on Wednesday.
The 5:30 p.m. rehearsal is open to all interested in joining the 100-voice Kona Choral Society, which is under the direction of Artistic Director Susan McCreary Duprey with accompanist Gloria Juan. No audition is necessary.
During the rehearsal, attendees will learn about the choral society as well as preview its upcoming season repertoire, which will include Mozart’s “Requiem” on May 19 at the Sheraton Kona Resort.
Rehearsals take place 5:45-8 p.m. Wednesdays at Kealakehe Intermediate School, 74-5062 Onipaa St. from 5:45-8 p.m.

Jefferson landscapes showcased at S. Kohala gallery
Peter Jefferson’s newest exhibit, “Hawaii Colors,” features the dramatic landscapes of the Big Island. The public is invited to meet the artist and talk story at an opening reception 4-6 p.m. Jan. 31 at The Third Dimension Gallery located at The Shops at Mauna Lani.
Jefferson draws his inspiration from the beautiful colors of the island where he directs the Kohala Plein Air group.
“I strive to have fun painting. Sir Issac Newton once said, ‘Live life as an exclamation not an explanation.’ I try to approach my painting the same way,” he said.
Trained as both an engineer and an architect, Jefferson developed a solid foundation in drawing and painting. His colorist style flourished at the DeCordova Museum and studying with watercolor and oil painters including Ovanes Berberian.
The Third Dimension Gallery features more than 70 artists, designed to intrigue and impress even the most sophisticated eye. It is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Classes &workshops
Choral workshop offered
Mark Hayes will lead a choral workshop Feb. 16 and 17 at St. James’ Church in Waimea.
Hayes is an internationally known composer and arranger, with his music being performed around the globe. He is a frequent guest conductor at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. The workshop will focus on the art of choral singing, through the preparation of a half-dozen of Mark Hayes’ compositions/arrangements. It culminates with a performance Feb. 18 at Kahilu Theatre.
Cost is $65 per person, or $70 to have music mailed. Sessions will be held Feb. 2 and 10 to familiarize participants with the music. Tickets for the Feb. 18 performance are $15.
