Kahilu Theatre presents film producer Jeannette Paulson Hereniko in her one-woman show “When Strangers Meet” Jan. 26 and 27 in the Mike Luce Studio in Waimea.
In this production, Hereniko shares a series of heart-warming stories with candid insights from her globetrotting journey as a film professional. What she discovers beyond the screen shatters her illusions of the world — and herself. Show time is 7 p.m. both days.
Hereniko moved to Honolulu in 1975 when she was selected to be a storyteller with the Artist-in-the-School’s program, a position held previously in her home state of Oregon. In “When Strangers Meet,” she tells stories that focus primarily on her 35 years in the film industry.
Audience members can expect to hear the inside scoop about her work as the founding director of the Hawaii International Film Festival, a position she held 1981-96, as well as how that compared to working with the famed Sonny Bono when they started the Palm Springs International Film Festival in 1990. She produced the award-winning feature film, “The Land Has Eyes,” which was written and directed by her husband, Vilsoni Hereniko. The movie was shown in the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 and at more than 30 international film festivals.
“When Strangers Meet” also reveals moments “behind the scenes” during the making of the movie on her husband’s island home of Rotuma, as well as the adventures of going to festivals to screen the film.
Her first one-woman show, “Wild Wisdom,” debuted in 2001. It was also about her life’s adventures. She performed it in Honolulu, California and Mexico. Her film credits include serving as a jury member for international film festivals in Germany, Singapore, Vietnam, India and the Philippines. She is a founding board member of the international organization NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema), and is currently a film producer, owner of www.asiapacificfilms.com, and a film curator for Alexander Street, an international film distribution company for universities.
