KAILUA-KONA — A Kailua-Kona man wanted on sex assault and kidnapping charges turned himself in to police last week after a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
James Tan, 37, surrendered himself to authorities at the Kealakehe police station on Friday. He was released on $10,000 bail.
On Dec. 4, a grand jury indicted Tan on two counts of first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping and first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 16. According to Hawaii Police, Tan ran into the victim while downtown on April 15. The two were acquaintances.
Police say the assault occurred in the morning the next day outside a public establishment on Alii Drive. Part of the assault also happened inside the vehicle the victim was driving that night.
On Dec. 29, a warrant was issued for Tan’s arrest.
