KAILUA-KONA — A tsunami watch has been canceled for the state of Hawaii following a magnitude-7.9 earthquake in the gulf of Alaska.
The earthquake, which had a registered depth of 15.5 miles, was recorded at 11:32 p.m. Monday. It was centered about 175 miles southeast of Kodiak City, Alaska.
It was upgraded to a magnitude-8.2 at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday and was later downgraded to a magnitude-7.9.
At 12:31 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey revised the temblor to a magnitude-7.9 p.m.
Based on all available information, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said 1:08 a.m. Tuesday that there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
