Samuel Alapai Kahanamoku Jr.
Samuel Alapai “Bunny” Kahanamoku Jr., 86, of Waimea died Jan. 19, 2018, at his residence. Born Jan. 25, 1931, in Honolulu, he was a water man, Hollywood stuntman who founded a union, U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, plastics engineer with Aerojet Rocketdyne and big game fishing captain. He was also known for recreating an old Hawaiian formula for pain relief.
A private ceremony is scheduled to celebrate Kahanamoku’s life. Anyone wishing to share aloha for Bunny, should contribute to the Hospice of North Hawaii.
He is survived by wife, Marena Kahanamoku; sons, Dexter and Tracy Kahanamoku; niece, Ellie Kahanamoku; hanai daughter and son, Sharon and George Handgis; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Herman Martines
Herman “Sabino” Martines 50, of Kailua-Kona died Nov. 16, 2017. He was born Nov. 11, 1967.
A celebration of life will be held noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 27 at Uncle Rodney Haili’s Tent next to Panaewa Park in Hilo.
He is survived by wife, Lori Martines of Kaumana; daughters, Natasha (Dustin) Bondallian of Pepeekeo, Sabrina (Brittney) Martines of Keaau and Sierra Martines of Kaumana; brothers, Patrick ( Claylyn) Martines of Keaau, Jason (Tabitha) Martines of Kailua-Kona, Berenten Cachero of Hilo and Ashton Martines of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Roberta (Gary) Martines of Keaau, Marilyn (Daniel) Pakele of Hilo, and Ashlyn (Jeremy) Martines and Ashley Wendy Stephens, all of Kailua-Kona; four grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Romaldo Madarang Sr.
Romaldo “Romie” Madarang Sr., 83, of Paauilo, died Jan. 12, 2018, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born on Feb. 7, 1934, in Kukuihaele, he was a retired fire captain for the Hawaii County Fire Department and U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. He was also a member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paauilo.
Private services were held.
He is survived by fiancee, Crispina Quitoriano; sons, Romaldo Madarang Jr. and Rendall (Helencia) Madarang; daughter, Natalie Gonsales; sisters, Marchuma Solomon and FeliciaRosario; brother, Sylvester (Edel) Madarang; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

William Gonzalez Jr.
William “Billy” Gonzalez Jr., 72, of Waimea, died Dec. 27, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired truck driver and heavy equipment operator and a member of the Alpha and Omega Church of God in Honokaa.
Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Jan. 28 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 2 p.m. funeral service, followed by cremation. Casual attire, no flowers.
He is survived by wife, Maria Gonzalez of Waimea; daughters, Isis (Shane Kea) Gonzalez of Pahoa and Franchelle (William) Hanson of Las Vegas; sons, Delbert Valadez of Sacramento, Calif., Bernard (Michelle) Guzman of Spanaway, Wash., Gerard Guzman of Spanaway, Wash. and Justin Dizon of Waimea; brothers, Robert Gonzalez and Kaleo Gonzalez, both of Washington state, and Charlie (Kathy) Rio of the mainland; sisters, Lafonda (Darryl) Diamond of Las Vegas and Shina Gonzalez of Waianae, Oahu; numerous grandchildren great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Hitoshi Futagami
Hitoshi Futagami, 63, of Hilo, died Jan. 16, 2018, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Ehime, Japan, he was a retired exporter of agricultural products, graduate of Nodai (Tokyo University of Agriculture) and president of the Nodai Club.
Friends may call at 10 a.m. Jan. 29 at Hilo Hooganji Mission, 457 Manono St., for an 11 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.
He is survived by wife, Pauline Futagami of Hilo; mother, Masumi Futagami of Japan; brother, Shu (Fumiko) Futagami of Japan; nephew, Daiichi Futagami of Japan; and niece, Kaede Futagami of Japan.

Gilbert Ashikawa
Gilbert Minoru Ashikawa, 97, of Kailua-Kona, died Dec. 8, 2017, at Ruth’s Place Care Home. Born June 10, 1920, in Holualoa, he was the founder of Kona Scenic Land Inc, a public accountant, a tropical fruit farmer, an insurance agent, past member of Kona Lions Club, charter member of the Kona Rotary Club, and member of Holualoa Kumiai and Daifukuji Soto Mission.
Private services were held.
He is survived by son, Gary Ashikawa of Honolulu; daughters, Amy Hata of Kailua-Kona and Faye (Terrence) McComas of Kealakekua; sister, Betty Tanga of Honolulu; brother, James Ashikawa of California; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Harold Mizuno
Harold J. Mizuno, 88, of Hilo, died Jan. 15, 2018, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. Born in Kukuihaele, he was a Korean and Vietnam War veteran and retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1977.
Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts.
He is survived by wife, Frances Mizuno of Hilo; daughters, Nancy (Van) Ichinotsubo, Evelyn (Darrell Agliam) Mizuno of Hilo; brothers, Clarence Mizuno, Royden Mizuno of Hilo; sisters, Adeline (John Oliveira) Fujisawa, Minerva (Stanley) Fujisawa of Hilo, Margaret (Randall) La Riviere of Oahu; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Royal Keaoopua Mitchell Sr.
Royal Keaoopua Mitchell Sr., 82 of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, died Jan. 20, 2018. Born Sept. 7, 1935, in Honolulu, he worked as a tug boat engineer.
No services are planned.
He is survived by daughter, Charmain (Albert) Camara of Kailua-Kona; son Royal Mitchell Jr. of Kailua, Oahu; two brothers; one sister; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

John Callender
John Henry Callender, 76 of Waimea died Jan. 19, 2018. Born Feb. 12, 1941, in Pasadena, Calif., he was CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory to be made to North Hawaii Hospice, Parker School (65-1224 Lindsey Rd., Kamuela, HI 96743) or Ojai Valley School (723 El Paseo Rd., Ojai, CA 93023).
He is survived by spouse, “Muffet” Laurien; sons, Rea (Kelly) Callender of Grass Valley, Calif., and Brodie Callender of Waimea; daughters, Laurien (Timark) Hamilton of McMinnville, Oregon, and Whitney (Todd) Demorest of Santa Rosa, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
