KAILUA-KONA — Authorities have identified the second victim killed in a weekend car crash in South Kona as Kailua-Kona man Richard Chamberlain.

Chamberlain, 56, and Roxane Cho, 54, also of Kailua-Kona, were not in a vehicle when they were struck near mile marker 84 in Honomalino by an Ocean View woman traveling south in a 2013 Nissan sedan on Mamalahoa Highway.

Hawaii Police officers responded to the scene at 8:13 p.m. Friday. Police say they don’t believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Hawaii Police Department Maj. Robert Wagner said police had earlier responded to a report of a domestic incident on the road a few miles away, but when officers arrived, nobody was there.

The description of the vehicle provided in that report matched the description of another vehicle seen at the scene of the crash.

Cho and Chamberlain were taken to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition. Cho was pronounced dead at 10:01 p.m. Friday and Chamberlain was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The driver of the Nissan, a 55-year-old woman, and her female passenger, also of Ocean View, were uninjured in the crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death of Cho and Chamberlain. This is the first and second traffic fatality this year, compared to four at this time last year.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646, ext. 229. Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers in Hilo at 961-8300.
