KAILUA-KONA — A Hawi man is facing sex assault and kidnapping charges in connection to an incident that occurred in January involving a female minor.

The alleged assault happened in the early hours of Jan. 27 to Jan. 28 in North Kohala. Hawaii Police Department Lt. Rio Amon-Wilkins said Mark William Kanui Munro, 18, met with a teenage minor and took her to a random house in the area.

Amon-Wilkins said Munro assaulted the victim in the carport. Afterward, he reportedly let her go.

On Jan. 29, Amon-Wilkins said the victim went to the hospital where she reported the assault to police. A sexual assault nurse exam was completed.

A warrant for Munro’s arrest was issued Friday and he was arrested and booked into jail on Saturday.

The 18-year-old is facing charges of two counts of first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping and first-degree burglary.

Munro was released on $40,000 bail.

A court date for an initial appearance has not yet been scheduled.
