Runnin’ with Rani: Gibbs, Mosch win Senior Strut 5K and 1-Mile run/walk

Hawaii County’s Elderly Activities Division presented the Senior Strut 5K and 1-Mile run/walk for adults aged 55 years and older at the West Hawaii Civic Center on Saturday.

The fourth annual event featured out-and-back courses that were held on the newly paved walking trail parallel to Ane Keohokalole Highway.

In the competitive 3.1-mile event, Stella Gibbs blew away the field with her fantastic finishing time of 21 minutes and 37 seconds. Over two minutes back and in second place was last year’s champion, Leonard Torricer, in 23:57, who was followed by Angus MacPherson (25:45), Ed Schroeck (25:59) and Bill Culhane (28:13).

The 1-mile event saw Walter Mosch whip past everyone to claim top honors with his speedy time of 7:29. Next to cross the finish line were Holualoa’s Jon Kunitake (8:09), Marie Kunitake (10:22), Betsy Solis (10:26), and Wahine Wright (12:14).
