The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival (HPAF) presents Stanford University’s Fleet Street Singers in Kona, Hilo and Waimea next month.

Proceeds from the all-male a capella performances will benefit HPAF’s 2018 Summer Festival slated June through July. A capella is a vocal performance sung without instruments.

“At HPAF, we are always looking to present different musical genres,” said Genette Freeman, development director at HPAF. “This music and comedy concert by an award-winning collegiate a capella group is a first. And, as always with HPAF, you can expect top quality. Fleet Street is no exception. These guys are hilarious, and the singing is great.”

A sample of the group’s unique repertoire include: “Mirror Mirror,” an ode reflecting on life’s greatest love of all; “Life-Sized Barbie,” a jazz number about a love that was never meant to be; and “Web Surfin’” a 1960s-style musical tribute to the internet.

“Plus an arsenal the size of Nebraska of jazz, classical, and sentimental serenades,” said Arjun Sheth, the group’s manager and a biology major at Stanford. “Of course, we always present ourselves with utmost class, clad in tuxedos and our iconic cardinal-red bow ties.”

When asked what the group was looking forward to in Hawaii, the group consensus was “swimming, singing at sunset, stargazing, trying new foods, …. making art and spreading laughter to a whole new community.”

The March 29 concert will take place at 7 p.m. at Aloha Theater in Kainaliu. A second concert will take place March 30 at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theater in Hilo. The third concert is March 31 at 4 p.m. at Davies Chapel on the Hawaii Preparatory Academy campus in Waimea.

Tickets for all three concerts are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
