Police arrest 28 for suspected DUI

KAILUA-KONA — Between Feb. 19 and Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers recorded the most arrests at 11 followed by South Hilo officers with nine and Puna officers with five. Officers in North Kohala, South Kohala and Ka’u arrested one driver each district.

So far in 2018, there have been 170 suspected drunken driving arrests islandwide compared with 200 at this time in 2017. Officers in the Hawaii Police Department’s Kona district, which includes the physical districts of North and South Kona, have arrested the most drivers at 76 followed by South Hilo officers with 40 arrests and Puna officers with 37 arrests.

Through Sunday, there have been 178 major accidents on Big Island roads, compared with 211 at this time last year. There have also been four fatalities on Big Island roads, the same number at this point in 2017.
