Bernice Tremaine

Bernice Tremaine, 95, of Hilo, died Feb. 26 at the Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation &Nursing Center. Born on Oahu, she was a homemaker. Private services held.

Survived by husband, James Tremaine of Hilo; daughters, Barbara Reny of Pahoa, Lena Hickman of Kau; sons, John (Geraldine) Arruda, Sr. of Honolulu, Anthony (Jennifer) Arruda of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Manuel Arruda, Sr. of Mountain View; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Rozemaryn Van Der Horst

Rozemaryn Van Der Horst, 92 of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, died Feb. 3. Born Feb. 19, 1925, in the Netherlands, she worked as a chemical engineer at her father’s electroplating company.

She is survived by nephews and nieces.

Memorial services will be held April 21, 2018, at 3 p.m. at Kona United Methodist Church, 74-4960 Palani Road, Kailua Kona.

Yoshio Sugihara

Yoshio Sugihara, 100, of Hilo, died March 5, 2018, in the Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center in Hilo. Born in Hilo on April 4, 1917, he retired from Hawaii Electric Light Company (H.E.L.C.O.) as a millwright.

He was a member of the Piihonua Kumiai and helper at the Seaside Restaurant and Aqua Farm in Hilo.

Private services held. No flowers or koden.

He is survived by son, Duane (Naomi) Sugihara of Hilo; daughter, Donna (Eric) Higuchi of Hilo; brother, James (Betty) Sugihara of Honolulu; sister, Tamako Matsumoto of Kansas; sisters-in-law, Doris Sugihara of Hilo and Shizue Sugihara of Honolulu; brother-in-law, Tennis Johnson of California; three grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Richard Rice

Richard Rice, 59, died Feb. 15 at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama Facility. He was born Oct. 26, 1958 in New Bedford, Mass.

No services. No known survivors.

Felicidad Andres

Felicidad “Fely” Gacusan Andres, 79, of Hilo, died Feb. 9 at her residence. Born Aug. 4, 1938, in Candon, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, she was a retired factory worker for the Mauna Loa Mac Nut Co. and she a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call on March 24 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a visitation from 9-10:30 a.m. with a prayer service at 10:30. Casual attire; burial at Homelani Memorial Park (Ilima Section) at 2 p.m.

She is survived by daughters, Brenda (Vernon, Sr.) Basque of Keaau and Priscilla Gacusan of Hilo; sons, Nelson Gacusan of Hilo and Froilan (Leimomi) Gacusan, Jr. of Kauai; three step-sons, Alejandro “Alex” Gabuat, Jr. and Norbert Gabuat of Hilo, Vladimar “Andy” Gabuat of Keaau; two grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dennis Arakaki

Dennis Toshiharu Arakaki, 69, died Feb. 4 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was born to Matsuichi and Haruko Arakaki on Jan. 13, 1949, and was a store manager for the former S.H. Kress and McCory Company. He later moved to Hawaii and was employed by UHaul as a senior auditor, then became the regional president of Hawaii, and later retired from Pizza Hut.

A memorial service/celebration of his life will held on March 25 at Hilo Women’s Club at 7 Lele St., Hilo. Visitation from noon to 1 p.m. with refreshments to follow.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Frances Arakaki of Hilo; son, John (Sherry) Macayan Jr. of Hilo; brothers, Harry (Melanie) Arakaki of Oahu, Allen (Beverly) Arakaki of Hawaii Kai, Oahu and Roy (Jaine) Arakaki of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters, Sandra (Yoshi) Tanabe of Waialua, Oahu and Lillian Takata of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Chad) Hao, Teryn (Alana) Macayan Kekaualua and Krysta Macayan of Hilo; seven great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lily Cariaga

Lily Anna Cariaga, 79, of Pahala, died Feb. 25 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 1, 1938, in Pahala, she worked for the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council (HCOEC) as a coordinator. She also was a member of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Ka’u, Na Kupuna Moku O Keawe, Police and Water Commission, Hawaii Burial and Aha Moku Council of Ka’u, Multi Cultural Society, and many more.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on March 24 at the Punaluu Beach Park Pavilion at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, monetary gifts are welcomed.

She is survived by her children, James (Tina) Kuahiwinui of Seattle, Wash., Darlene (Winslow) Vierra of Naalehu, Georgette Kailiawa of Pahala, Georgina Kailiawa (Henry) Chung and Girly (Jr.) Morita from Volcano, Bill (Angie) Lorenzo, Alohalyn Beck, Donelle (Nani) Akana and Justin (Courtney) Kailiawa of Hawaii; sister in-law, Linda Kailiawa of Pahala; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
