Christine McClendon

Christine “Tina” Jane McClendon, 69, of Keaau, died Feb. 2 at the Legacy of Hilo. Born in Lompoc, Calif., she was the proprietor of Golden Touch Cleaning Services.

She is survived by daughter, Lisa (Travis) Barros of Hilo; son, Daniel (Jade) Querubin of San Antonio, Texas; brothers Joe Gonzales of Lompoc, Calif., and Gregory (Delilah) Sausedo of Salinas, Calif.; sisters Rose Gonzales of Lompoc, Calif., and Rachel (Randy) Lent of Soledad, Calif.; nine grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Kikuyo Kawakami

Kikuyo Kawakami, 93, of Hilo, died March 12 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Kapoho, she was a homemaker and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Piihonua Kumiai.

Private services were held.

She is survived by sons, George (Ginger) Kawakami of Henderson, Nev., Benjamin Kawakami of Orange County, Calif.; daughters, Elsie (Irving) Hee of Mililani, Oahu, Betty (Harry) Yada and Jean Kawakami of Hilo; brothers, Ichiro (Matsue) Nishiura and Hideo (Betty) Nishiura of Hilo, Norman Nishiura of Pearl City, Oahu; sisters, Mildred Nakanishi and Sadako Aburamen of Hilo, Takako Desaki of Pearl City, Oahu; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Louis Silva-Sampaio

Louis “Louie” Silva-Sampaio, Jr., 72, of Mountain View, died March 15 at the Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Honolulu and was a self-employed auto mechanic.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. March 29 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. funeral service, followed by cremation. Casual attire, no flowers.

He is survived by his wife Bridget Silva-Sampaio of Mountain View; sons David Boyd of N.M., Louis Kekoa’o’kealii Silva-Sampaio of Mountain View and Daniel Keahi Silva-Sampaio of N.M.; daughters Angelina Silva-Sampaio of Mountain View, Mary Anastasia (Conrad) Medeiros of Mountain View, Alicia May Kahealani Watson of Reno, Nev. and Katherine Kawehilani Silva-Sampaio of Reno, Nev.; mother Jeannette Leimomi Silva-Sampaio of Mountain View; brothers Michael (Tess) Silva-Sampaio of Calif., and Samuel (Estella) Silva-Sampaio of Calif.; sister Judith Kuulei (Hartwell) Kaeo of Hilo, Rosemary (Gabriel) Saberon of Mountain View and Veronica Salas of Colo.; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson; numerous cousins, nieces &nephews.

Recto Saplan

Recto “Rick” Ramos Saplan, 61, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 24 at Queen’s Medical Center. Born in Tarlac, Philippines, he served in the Army after graduating from Ka’u High School and retired from the Kona Country Club in the maintenance department. He owned and operated his own taxi and tour service under Saplan Taxi.

He is survived by his former wife Linda Ganir; sons Ricky (Kylen) Saplan of Las Vegas, Nev.; Riley (Latasha Ortiz) Saplan of Kailua-Kona; daughter Rehna Saplan of Kailua-Kona; brothers Danny (Leslie Rosario) Saplan of Pahala, Hawaii; Wilson (Leonora) Saplan of Kailua-Kona; Dante Saplan of Naalehu, Hawaii; sisters Shirley (Richard) Sorensen of Bremerton, Washington; Lily (Davy) Tabbada of Kailua-Kona; four grandchildren and numerous, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the Life Water Church (formerly Central Kona Union Church) on March 31, 4-9 p.m. Cremation to follow and burial at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery at 9 a.m. April 3.
