For whatever reason, others’ opinions seem to bring out the worst in some people.

At least that seems to be the case on our website, www.westhawaiitoday.com, where readers are allowed to leave anonymous comments on news and opinion pieces.

But the dialogue at the bottom of My Turn opinion columns and letters to the editor often turns too nasty, sometimes threatening, that WHT is spiking the ability for readers to leave them there.

They’ll still have the ability to post remarks on news pieces, just not opinions. It’s unfair that letter writers have to leave their full names and hometowns only to have their opinion the catalyst for harsh, hidden name calling.

Not everyone is guilty of it, but enough that it warranted too much time to cleanup and police, so the change, which other news outlets have done, was needed.
